Headlights help...

Hey all... I'm so depressed right now

I tried to polish out my headlights as 11 years of wear and tear have caused some significant dings.

So I tried the sanding + PlastX method.

Since there were some big dings, I started with 320 grit sandpaper and worked down the grits to 2000. I wetsanded.

Then I finished with some PlastX. But... now there are fine scratches all over my lamp (whereas there were only some and some dings before)!!!

Anyone have an idea how I can remedy it? It took about an hour to do each lamp, maybe I didn't work on it for long enough?

I'm thinking some clearcoat or getting a powerball or some rubbing compound, but I'm already broke...

Anyway, thanks for any help, guys...

320. I suppose I should say UP. There were some chips that were fairly deep, so I tried using a rougher paper to sand through it. I got it to be smooth, but the dings were still there.

Anyhow, i went to 2000, and PlastX'ed.

I'll post a picture if I can.

I'm thinking maybe I was lazy and didn't spend enough time. I'm thinking of redoing it, but I dont want to waste another hour. If I redoing it, should I start at a higher grit?

edit: here's the picture

Bugger. The 320 did that, hope no TN member suggested it. 1200 minimum, finish with 2000. Myself, I NEVER sandpaper, easier ways like this next option. I would probably now borrow a high speed small orbital polisher (or sweet talk some boy at the valet) and do it with brasso or any good metal polish. These are very fine cutting compounds - Silver polish also works great. 3-10 minutes each light with the right machine should sort it. Use caution on the surrounding trim.

Or lots more sanding with the 1000-2000, may be the only way now to deal with it. But I still don't like sandpaper.

Whatever way you do, finish with a quality auto wax, as the surface will be totally unprotected. Best of luck Gladis.

dont have handy friends handy, much less car savvy friends.

All rich snobs who take their cars to shops in my quiet suburb, lol.

Gonna have to do with the manual option and see what happen.

Won't going with 1000 be marginally easier, get through it quicker? Or even 800? I guess I'll get a sanding pad to keep my hands from falling off

the lower the grit the deeper you will gouge out the surface, which is why you have the scrathes, now you have to take off all the material around the scrathces to get them smooth again, if you were doing paint an body your primer or some putty would fill them, since you are not going to cover the headlights with anything, your only option is to keep polishing till its smoothed out, yes it will take a long time, but if you start with a lower grit you will make even more work for yourself. also i would wet sand with a sanding sponge to keep from getting finger valleys. also check with some parts houses, they might have polishers you can rent.

I'll find a sanding sponge, what's a parts house?

For now I gotta worry about my chem midterm and take my mind off of it for a while...

What a mistake! :/

1000, on a sanding block, or proper pad. I don't recommend less grit than that. Finish with a 1500 & 2000. Wet, use a bucket, easier than the hose. Glove up. You've probably lost all your fingerprints now - good time to deal to that ex!

And don't beat yourself up over it - noone else but you will notice it, it's hardly that much of a biggie. A parts house is an auto supply store. The car valet guys may do it for you for $20 - try them.

welp the only way to get rid of them is keep sanding with real fine sandpaper till they are gone or just get new headlights.

Yea, I'm not shelling out 200 bucks for new headlights. I guess I'll work on them during my free time.
