3rd & 4th Generation (1992–1996 & 1997–2001)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 1992-1996 & 1997-2001
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
Im now an offical Gen 3.5 guy, but I miss my 88 Cam for sure!!
Im now with a 1996 5SFE 5 speed, but I miss my Japan built Gen 2!
It's funny how the car is 8 years newer yet not all that much faster...WTF!
Good, reliable, solid, and more refined then a Gen2 Camry, but jsut not the same.......If it wasnt for the fact that my 88' was rusting to SHIT, I would still have it for sure!!
Im gonna sell my gen 3.5 in about 2 months or so and try to pick up a late model Celica or Corolla (or perhaps a Civic...please forgive me)....my problem is I refuse to drive an automatic and finding an unmolested manual transmission car is not so easy.
My Gen2 had nice options(Moonroof, cruise control)......ohhhh how I miss it so.....
Welcome to the gen 3(.5) club. How can you be considering a Celica and a Civic at the same time? That's like saying I think I'll buy a Supra or maybe a Maxima. Lol...

good Q......My tastes vary for sure....but the Civic is a pretty sporty little ride, in reality not too far off from a Celica......BTW, it's funny that you bring the Maxima.........Nissan Maxima is doable, about the only Nissan I would Own, but would have to be the 5 speed of course!
I recently owned a 2001 Altima 5 speed for a about a minute, and as for as quality, Id give it a "C-"(IMO, the car was put together like shit), but for speed Id give a "B-", "she" was pretty F*cking fast for a 4 cylinder!
nissans aare sportier cars for sure but definatly dont have the same quality as the yota or honda. id look at a civic only if it was an SI, thoes are pretty quick little cars.

Welcome to Gen3. Yea, as much as I hate the "im better than you cos I drive a Honda" attitude, I have to admit the 2 of the 3 Celicas (ST181 & 182) I've owned didn't have the performance of my long ago 1.6Si JDM Civic. (The GT4 did tho ) However, the Civic is just too damn small for me, I'd need a Legend or Accord to feel right. Had a Legend once too, 3.2 sedan, amazing luxo-barge. Loved it.
For me, the Camry (wagon) is all about reliability & practicality, which it wins over most no question. I've owned nearly 100 cars in the last 25yrs, so I have a pretty good idea of what ones I want now. It's good to keep your options open, hence the two cars I drive today.

Yeah, I like hondas, they're good cars, it's the kids driving them that usually suck.
What I find funny after watching a lot of Top Gear episodes on youtube is that apparently in the U.K., Hondas are driven by old people and are considered pretty boring cars. Or maybe it's just Clarkson?

The general consensus I get from people is that Honda and Toyota are pretty much equal......Honda generally being the sportier of the two (stockwise, of course.....in the aftermarket bolt-on world, it's anybodys game!)

EXACTLY!!!!!!
....my question to Toyota is......why only 10 more HP on a car that's 8 years newer?????
dont get me wrong, the car is more civilized then a Gen2, but still!!

maybe its because its a 4-cylinder car and not the sportier v6 model? if you want more power, get the more powerful engine option.

.........The V6 couldnt be had in a 5 speed in 1996, which is what I have (I dont drive slushboxes)
.......did you read what I wrote, cause it didnt seem like you did. My point was a model of car that's about 8 years newer should have more of a difference then a mere 10 hp, especially considering that the gen 3-3.5 is bigger and heavier then the Gen 2.
....and there are fast 4 cylinder engines out there, so you just saying that it's a 4 cylinder, so that's why it's slow is BS........they couldve made the stock 4 cylinder with a little more "umph", if you know what I mean.
.....BTW, I just wanted to state that I think the Gen 3.5 Camrys are by far better looking then the Gen 2(or any Gen Camry for that matter...."opinions are like assholes, I know , I know" )
Well I see it as if you care about any power than you would get the V6 model and the V6 gen 3 compared to the gen 2 V6 was alot more difference in power than compared to the 4 bangers. The point of the 4 bangers were better fuel economy and the it was 130 hp till 96 where it went obd-2 and cut off 5 hp and it also increases the displacement from 2.0 to 2.2 I guess to compensate for the extra weight meant more torque I guess they had no attention on making it faster compared the economy based (4 banger) gen 2 model in a business sense. I can't remember but I think it's like over 30 hp difference between the gen 2 V6 and the gen 3 V6 though.
Too bad the V6 was only available with the 5-speed from 92-93 only for the gen3.
Besides you can't say 8 years you have to compare it to the first year that gen started which was 92.

all good points my friend........
but maybe perhaps when they re-styled the car a bit(gen 3.5), they couldve made a nice boost to the HP as well.......
My opinion is that they were selling so many Camrys at the time, that it didnt matter how slow or fast they were.....so in their minds, why make 'em faster and spend millions doing it when the buying public didnt care at the time!
I think that the I4 shouldve had 150 hp bare minimum for 1996, with the V6 with atleast 200 hp.....IMO
The POS 1993+ Nissan Altima had 150 hp from their stock 4 cylinder.....and that was considered a smaller class then the Camry!
