3rd & 4th Generation (1992–1996 & 1997–2001)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 1992-1996 & 1997-2001
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
Car is 2000 camry. When the car cruising, say 2k rpm, and I give it a little gas I hear a tick..tick..tick..tick...almost sounds like a valve ticking, but as soon as I release the gas a little, even though the rpms are the same, the ticking goes away. So I don't think its a valvetrain issue? Whatelse could it be?
Is it possible this is a knocking issue due to the gas? I run 87 octane, but from what I've read here there's no need to run more than. Or is this common with the 5sfe??
Not Chasis noise, its load dependent. If I take my foot off the gas, no ticking, when I apply gas (load) tick comes back. RPM Barely change. So I don't think it has anything to do with the valvetrain as it's moving the same speed regardless.
A while back my 5sfe would make a strange ticking noise that was kinda faint. If my memory serves me correctly, it too only occurred upon acceleration. On top of that, I would occasionally smell exhaust inside the cabin even with the windows up. The cause of my problem was a small-ish hose that came disconnected, from what my dad and I concluded was part of the pollution control system. It's located at the very back and at the very top of the engine compartment, just a little to the left from the center. It required me to put a zip tie on the hose to keep it connected (the nipple for this hose points down, so gravity was pulling the hose off of the nipple).
It will probably be a small exhaust leak ( manifold/hose/gasket ). If it's an automatic try brake torquing it a bit stopped and see if it makes that noise . If you can get someone to help that makes it easy to find .
I'd check the exhaust for leaks. There's a couple of ways to check it.
1) Go to the tailpipe with the car running, and place your foot over the opening. You should feel a lot of pressure. If you feel little pressure, plus you hear the ticking....you have a leak.
2) With the car running (be careful with this one) open the hood and feel around the head/manifold for direct heat and air blowing. Be careful not to actually touch the metal, or it will burn you. Then check down the cat, and work your way back.
Hmm. that sounds like it could be it. You know, I've had this problem before on my ford and I kept thinking it was the valves, but it was an exhaust leak. I don't know why that didn't cross my mind this time around. I'll check that out for sure, It is a 5spd btw. It makes sense, more gas=louder combustion. That's why under no load I can't here it. I'll check that out. Thanks!
i have the same noise so i talked to my shop instructor (master tech for chevy for a good 30+ years) and he said most likely it just the injectors firing off.. he didnt do any diagnostic or looked under the hood.

I dont mean to thread-jack either..but I have a ticking-type noise from the engine right when it's getting ready to switch gears. It's an automatic...and you know when you are accelerating at a non-aggresive speed so that it shifts somewhere between 3-4000RPM, and it kindof hangs at an RPM for a second before it changes gears? That's when mine does it. Is this normal for this engine or is it something I need to be concerned with? It's done it for as long as I can remember.
Thanks guys.
