3rd & 4th Generation (1992–1996 & 1997–2001)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 1992-1996 & 1997-2001
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
Looking to add some electrical features to my 92 Camry i recently bought
i have already added HID's to the car and noticed when the door is opened with the key out the headlights shut off..
what i was wanting to do is extend that feature to allow the radio to continue playing and windows to be controlled after the key has been removed from the ignition until the door is opened.. have this feature in my 97 grand prix and miss that in the Camry..
should be fairly simple most should be able to be done at the fuse/ relay box but havent looked into it much yet ill have it done within the next week and let you all know how it goes im just hoping somebody else has done it already would be a nice time saver as im not yet familiar with this car
For the power windows:
There is a sort of master control wire, which receives 12V from the ignition switch, and allows the power windows to be active. Actually, the circuit gives you a 60 sec. period after the IGN switch is turned off when windows are still active. .... Not much trouble to just wire an additional manual switch so that windows are active all the time until turned off. ...
For the radio:
Again, it looks like there is one particular wire which requires 12V to activate the radio.
So, to get the radio to work without the ignition key, you could just install a manual switch ... Little effort required.
The radio illumination appears to be independent.... would require additional effort. ...
To get the windows and radio to turn off when you open the driver's door, you might have to install an independent plunger switch in the door channel someplace... ... Automatic Headlight turnoff circuit is not really available to modify.... You wouldn't want the headlights on all the time.
So, it might work like this.
To activate the long term 'IGN OFF mode' for the power windows and radio, you would have a manual switch on the dash for each ... push button, toggle, or whatever.
If the long term function switches are turned ON, the radio and power windows would operate and be active, even with the IGN switch turned off. Opening the driver side door would immediately deactivate the radio and the power windows would deactivate in about 60 sec.
IF the panel switches are OFF, then you would have normal turn off of the radio and power windows.
There would probably be two wires going to the plunger switch in the door channel ... one for power ... the other to signal that somebody is actually in the car ... and has had the ignition switch on. ... Would use an SCR to keep the radio and window off after it had deactivated initially. That is, you would have to turn the ignition switch on again to get the radio and windows.
... Is this generally what you wanted? Would it be adequate ... or what?

My windows do that already, and the radio thing seems silly to me. If you were listening to the radio, you have to stay in the car which defeats the purpose of having it stay on without the key as if you were staying in the car you would want AC/heat. Also, my stereo will cut out running on just the batt... But hey, that's just IMHO
You windows already have that feature but it is temporary. My 96 has it at least, If you shut the car off and pull the key out, as long as no one opens their door you can control your windows and moon roof for a minute. Then it stops functioning.

what I was saying is that it'd be alot of work for no real reason. I don't even get why the GM ones do it (and I know what he's talking about, I drove my dad's Silverado for a year) It always just goes off as soon as you get out anyway, and if you were wanting to sit in the car and listen to music you'd have to have the motor running for any decent system anyway. But to each his own, yada yada. It'd be a cool trick but not worth the effort IMHO.
