3rd & 4th Generation (1992–1996 & 1997–2001)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 1992-1996 & 1997-2001
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
wondering if i should buy an underdrive pulley and put a belt on that eliminates the a/c(because it doesnt work any way) would it be worth it to buy for around 160 and will it have any significant gains?
try searching, i remember this being discussed years ago. i remember there being a concern with blowing up on the 5sfe and the big debate about the harmonic balancer or whatever it was. I dont think a huge gain will be felt but Im sure it would make a difference.
The issue w/ the harmonic balancer is that the stock pulley has one and the underdrive pulley does not. I don't know the specifics, but it is generally not recommended to eliminate the harmonic balancer, and the 5S-FE won't see any major gains short of forced induction.

there have been debates on this. from my experiance, unless ur racing then its usually more trouble then its worth. on alot of cars people often express problems with the function of alternators, power steering pumps, water pumps, ect. ive never seen any good gains from underdrive pullies and my friends have them on cars that make MUCH more power then these cars do, except in the case they have a high efficency accesories. the A/C doesnt really cause much friction because if its not enguaged then its free to rotate, but i guess a little less friction couldnt hurt.
I have the unorthodox underdrive pulley on mine for about 20k and have not had any problems. Do not expect much power from it. Although every little bit helps.
and it's more for throttle response than anything else since the engine will then spin up faster- kind of like a lightened flywheel does, but on the accessories/belt side instead of engine/tranny side

Yep. I've done it on the Z, and it made a notable difference in free revs. However that was maybe a 5% rwhp increase only, not enough to justify IMO for a Camry. Do it anyway & tell us the results! Heck, its only a couple of notes.
I was thinking about getting an Unorthodox Underdrive Pulley. Just wondering, but how hard would it be to install one myself? If I took it to a shop, about how much would they charge?
Get an Unorthodox Ultra S Underdrive pulley, it will free up some rotating mass. Also, if your a/c unit doesn't work you should remove it, it will free up some weight. Since loosing weight is the best performance upgrade you can make and in your case its free.
