3rd Generation What is that thing you bolt the headlights to called....?

As many of you know i have a gen 3.5 with the gen 3 headlight conversion. They don't bolt up in the same location so right now they are zip ties in a couple places. So to the questions: A) what are they supposed to bolt up to? Radiator support or bumper support? and B) can i get this peice from the gen 3 model and bolt it up and still be able to use my gen 3.5 bumper? I just hate stuff that is not to OEM quality so i need this to get done before the body work is started. Thanks guys!

I am not sure if you mean how the assembly mounts to the body or how the reflector case mounts to the headlight assembly.

Assembly to the body is 3 bolts (green circles) and one nut (yellow circle). One more screw holds the grill. The three bolts have a flange at the top that allows the assembly to move around a little bit. The nut is accessed behind the side light assembly.

Now the reflector is held onto the assembly at three points and also has a spring. Two of the points are the adjusment mechanisms. The third is a pivoting bolt. You need to remove the adjustment mechanisms first and then you can sneak a skinny wrench into the pivot bolt to unscrew it from the reflector. It's a pain but I just did it to fix a broken headlight. I was going to write it up with pictures but I haven't had the chance yet.

he's talking about where the asm connects - i thought it was 4-6 bolts (there are 2 hidden ones, i believe) ...

where the headlight connects to its mounting bracket doesnt affect him, as he didnt take the housing apart from the asm

drew - why not just drill/tap holes wherever you need them and bolt the sucker in?

i may just drill and tap, but now that i am doing the gen 3 front end conversion, i figured why not make sure the lights bolt up to. The only ones not are the ones at the very ends near the grill.....

The main purpose of the two nearest the grill are to secure the grill. The bottom bolt is steadying a peg that the grill sits on and the upper one is a bolt that holds the grill in place. Neither one seems to be important in maintaining the position of the light assembly itself. They just seem to be there in order to make the job of assembling the grill easier.

well the inside of my headlight needs something to secure it since if is swinging in. It needs to be bolted to maintain its position.

OK, the square green area is where the assembly body bolts to the frame. The long skinny green box is showing where the bolt itself runs through the assembly. I would think this is the attachment point you are looking to duplicate. The two yellow boxes are the fasteners for the grill. Now the lowwer yellow fastener also bolts an extrusion of the headlight assembly to the frame. That extrusion has a peg that the grill sits on. However, (if it isn't broken like mine was - see the JB Weld?) it also gives more support to the headlight. Just not as much as the one in green.
