Problems with a 94' Camry

Now I have absolutely no knowledge as far as cars go. I had purchased a 94' Camry and it has ran perfectly for a year and a half, purrs like a kitten. Now to start off, I recently had my transmission (automatic) changed (the one before wouldn't shift, even when you moved between Reverse and Drive or Neutral you would feel it on the car, if you tried to accelerate in Drive the RPM's would go up but the car would not move.) As soon as it was changed the problem was solved, now the strange thing was that with this new transmission when I shift into Reverse I hear and feel a "thud" at first I thought nothing of it but it has begun to worry me so specially because now whenver I press the brakes the "Reverse" Gear Light turns on (the one right next to my spedometer). Even when the car is off if I begin to press the brake it will turn on. Now I have already established that a few of my brake lights are malfunctioning and I am planning to replace that.

But here is another thing, even though that might indicate that the lights are malfunctioning I dont think is should affect the way the car stops. Everytime I am driving and I have to come to a complete stop as I am pressing the break between the car slowing down at 15-0mph the car begins to shake and make a weird rumbling noise. Accelerating is no problem the automatic shifting seems to be fine, its only this weird brake and reverse light anamoly that is worriying me so. Despite all this, the car purrs like a kitten (when I am not coming to a complete stop.)

PS. The oils where all changed the day I had my new transmission put in which was a month and a half ago.

Anyone have any ideas?

First off..do you have a warranty on the tranny? Was it new, rebuilt, or a used tranny?

When you say all the fluids...do you mean the tranny fluid along with the rest?

It's possible that the tranny mount has gone bad (should have gone ahead and replaced it when tranny was out. there are 4 mounts on that engine/tranny. Check them and see what their condition is. If it is bad, it will cause that thud you are talking about.

Almost sounds like my problem with my son's 93 Camry. Wrecking yard trans will be installed next week. Fingers crossed on this. If I continue to have trans problems, a new car will be in the works.....

Good luck on yours

I would suspect that shorts or bad grounds in the tail/reverse light fixtures are back feeding voltage to the reverse indicator on the dash
