To reset the ECU...unplug the negative battery cable from the battery for a couple minutes and then hook it back up.

When you depress the red emergency release button on the base of the shifter, does it engage drive? Try that 1st if you haven't. May be a solenoid or even complete brake light failure causing it. (I'm assuming the USDM cars require the brake pedal depressed prior to releasing from park as do JDM)

had the same problem last week
car drives great then last thursday morning i was going to school when my car could not shift out of Park...so frustrating
theres a small black tab thats on the top next to the shift, pry it off with a screwdriver & press the button to shift into Drive
Once i got it out of Park i drove to my mechanic and found out a fuse under my steering wheel blew out
I had a feeling it had to an electrical problem because when i depress my brake pedal, the brake lights did not go on
see if youre having the same issue

Check 15A ECU-IG fuse ... located in under dash fuse box to the left of steering wheel.
This is related to transmission shift lock.
Also related 15A Cig/Radio fuse and 15A Stop fuse. ... same fuse box.

had this problem before also. It was either a 10 or 15 amp fuse located near the steering wheel also. My dash also went out too at the same time. hope you get it figured out.

Aha, another difference between the markets, Japan has a small red button in the same spot.
