4th Generation 2001 v6 Camry with 100k miles - what to look out for?

Hi guys,

Just moved to Santa Monica, CA from Ireland, and need something to get me from home to work (around 5 miles of stop-start traffic, with some freeway driving at the weekends) - I've encountered a 2001 V6 Camry for sale - is there anything specific I should watch out for?

Thanks

Ewan

Biggie is that the 90k service was done. That includes timing belt, water pump, and prob. make sure they changed the coolant at the time (who doesnt when doing a waterpump)

I agree with the above post, this isn't just with Camry's, but you should always check to make sure that the timing belt and water pump were replaced, because around the 100K mile mark is when they start to fail. If it hasnt been replaced yet, offer them a lower amount for the car, because to replace those two items is generally between $400-$600.

Check the motor...

Timing Belt and Water pump as everyone says...
Make sure there are no weird sounds
Make sure it starts strong
Normal Idle
Check transmission fluid

Make sure the brakes are in good order
Check the tires
Make sure there are no funny clunks or noises when you drive it

Other than that these cars run great.

Hi guys,

Thanks for the great answers, I'll be sure to give the car I good going over when I see it... Regarding the oil sludging issue - what's the easiest way to check for this? Engine smoking? Sludge on the inside of the oil cap? Something else?

Thanks

Ewan

I am getting ready to replace the clutch on my 2000 V6. It has just over 119K on it, but I noticed that the pedals were replaced with heavy duty pedals or racing type when I bought it. It should of gave me the idea that the car was driven rather heavily and maybe even raced. Can you provide some warnings or hints on what to do when replacing the clutch? Being retired military, I have access to the auto hobby shop on base and will be using a chassis lift to do the work.

Any help would be appreciated.
