I thought I'd share my experience yesterday trying to get my exhaust fixed. The price you pay for work, does really depend on who you go to.
As soon as it got cold up here, my flex pipe broke, not only that, the flange to the cat as well. Normally I would do the work myself, but have found out recently I now have three herniated disks in my lower back, and it would be a suicide mission to try to do this myself, the cold weather doesnt help either.
I borrowed my fiance's Taurus day before last and she called around while I was at work. She got quoted $250, for the job, by my normal mechanic they didnt tell her whether or not it was the flex or the whole pipe. They couldnt do it till next Wednesday. Not good enough.
So yesterday, I went to Monro, yadda yadda yadda, $547. lmfao, "are you f*cking kidding me?" <-direct quote

he does the bs lets see what we can do, typing away on the computer. How about $420...... umm, I dont that much money and my mechanic quoted me $250. He told me to get that quote from the mechanic, but they were closed.
So in desperation, I go to Midas or what use to be Midas, but it was still the same building who did the pipe the last time back in 2002. They put it on the lift...blah blah blah $287, for the whole pipe. "Do it"
Now obviously cheaper is definitely not always better. ...what the heck, the last pipe, was about as cheap as you could get and it lasted 5yrs. It was just about exactly half what monro quoted, which is also not a great place for an exhaust. Oh and they did it in one hour, on a Saturday! Needing a new pipe after only 5yrs might sound bad, however I live at about 1400ft, in the middle of upstate NY, so think Snow, Salt, traveling great distances often, that kind of stuff.
The moral of the story, always shop around. It's kind of satifying to know you just saved a lot of money and the car sounds great now, it must have been leaking for a few months, what a difference.
