160,000--Should i rebuild my old or buy a new engine

hey guys, ive been driving my camry for nearly 3 years, and have just now started considering to fix it up. But the question is, since i have 160,000 on her should i rebuild the engine or buy a new one? If i decide to rebuild it, what parts do i have to replace? Also whats a good site to get performance parts from?

Thanks for the help,
Joey H

I don't think any of that is necessary but if you must, rebuild.

Dont do anything until you need to. These engines run forever. You're engine has just gotten broken in. Mine just turned 326,000 yesterday.

i may be retarded but what engine? what year? any problems? 160 isnt much on these cars. i know several people who are creeping up on 300K. we would usually reccomend fixing things as they happen. if u were hell bent on a rebuild then id replace timing belt, water pump, the balanncer, all the seals and gaskets and piston rings as well as a cleaning of the internals.

i just hit 165K yesterday, planning on buying a new car soon because my gen 3 has no a/c, it needs a whole new a/c system because I was involved in an accident couple years ago, and needs new motor mounts. Otherwise my gen 3 would be great to keep and probably run up to 200K. Im planning to get etheir a gen 4 camry V6 or gen 5 maxima SE

If it's running, don't touch it. I have 170k miles and it's still going strong. I did just change a distributor.......but that is WAY different than "requiring a rebuild".

Now you might be talking about "performance" as in Fast and the Furious performance. If that's that case don't bother adding anything to the engine. Just swap in a 3SGTE motor from Japan.

My '92 is slowly approaching 250K and still running like a champ. If it ain't broke don't F*** with it! (Tune-ups and oil changes etc are a great idea however.)

can you tell us what is wrong with your engine?

if you really think 160k miles is a problem, then you don't know much about toyotas.

As long as you dont have any outstanding problems, just keep driving your car. The engine is designed to last you much longer than 170k so just do the regular care and enjoy your car.

Unless you are talking about rebuilding for Forced Induction

Since a lot of you long life people have posted on this thread, I have a couple questions:

How many oxygen sensors have you had to change?
I bought my '95 LE V6 wagon used in '98 w/45,000 on it.
In the first year I had to change one. Then in 2006 I had to change 2 more plus a solenoid- that was at about 120,000.
Now the damn CEL is on again, and because I just failed emissions, I assume it is yet another damn OS. Incl. service these things are not cheap to replace!
Is this typical? That is at least 4, (maybe now 5) in 9 years.
