3rd & 4th Generation (1992–1996 & 1997–2001)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 1992-1996 & 1997-2001
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
Im planning to get a new car soon, deciding on a gen 4 camry or a gen 4 or 5 maxima. I found this gen 4 on craigslist - 2000 Camry LE V6, 109K, 1 owner, Automatic..for only $4800. Im wondering if thats worth buying or should I buy a maxima SE? Oh btw, heres the link on craigslist http://chicago.craigslist.org/nwc/car/477587399.html

You need to inquire specifically about the timing belt and water pump.
These are to be replaced at 90k mi. .... and would add several dollars to your immediate expenses.

I bought my Camry about a month ago, and in the process, drove every comparable import imaginable. I drove a Maxima with less miles, but it already had some body rust. It didn't seem as well built as the Camry.
I researched the heck out of cars before landing on the Camry. You can't beat it as far as reliability. The only car that can even really come close is the Accord, but if you live in a wintery climate, you see what the salt does to those cars. They rust out many times faster than a comparable Camry. Look at the older cars on the road around where you live. Look at Camry's, Maxima's, Accords, Galant's, 626's. The Camry's always seem to have the best condition bodies, relative to their counterparts. And they always are at the top in reliability. It may not have as much "style", but to me, all the other pros outweigh that con. All I can say is "TRD kit, BABY!!!"

thats all up to the owner itself to keep the car's exterior in good condition.
and someone has stated, make sure the timing belt, water pump, and the 90k serivce been done. if it havent been done and you want it, tell them to lower the price.

You are correct. A well taken care of car will definitely last longer. BUT, a neglected Toyota always seems to rust slower than a neglected Honda or Nissan.
