Best way to flush a 3VZ cooling system?

Hi forum, what the best method to flush a V6? I tried reverse flushing through the top hose but there seems to be a non-return or similar stopping that. Do I need to remove the plastic cover & flush via the bottom pipe? And I was going to use a flushing agent (can) for 100miles or so, no worries?

hey papariccardo, there is a drain plug at the bottom of the radiator. that's what i use to drain the old coolant out, then just fill the system with new coolant and leave the cap off, then start the engine and top up the system until the engine reaches normal operating temperature. once no more coolant goes in, put the cap on.

make sure that your overflow tank has enough coolant in it too. check the level over the following days as it may draw a bit of coolant from the overflow as the engine cools down each time you turn it off, that's if there was any air left in the system.

doing the above, you replace most of the coolant in the system. if you're pedantic, maybe repeat one or two more times over the following weeks to ensure all of the coolant has been replaced.

there are workshops that have special equipment for this. it's a flushing machine that is connected to the cooling system and operated with the engine running. it replaces 100% of the coolant. you'll pay for it though.

Prestone sells a kit for flushing the coolant system. The main part is a "T" fitting that you splice into your heater hose. It has an adapter to accept a garden hose and you drain out what you can and then use the garden hose to flush out the rest. I think that I paid $4 for one at Wal-Mart.
