3rd & 4th Generation (1992–1996 & 1997–2001)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 1992-1996 & 1997-2001
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
ok so i did my search like all good little tn boys and girls do, and got lotsa answers except the ones i really need to know. i want to put in a grant or other after market wheel in my 97 camry, yea i know i loose the air bag, people lived a long time before air bags, blah blah blah. ok now that we have the madatory safety crap out the way, anyone know which adapter will work on mine? also will it affect the cruise control and or the horn operations? my cruise is on the stalk at the lower part of the wheel, not in the wheel if that helps, i guess i need to hear from gen 4 people who have done this.
also will it disable the passenger side airbag, trip any codes, and whats the best method for extracting a steering wheel with an unpopped air bag so i dont launch my teeth thru the back window?
Airbags saved my life when I got in an accident in my SAAB.

well as i said i understand that air bags save lives, so do seat belts, and as you stated in another post (here) you werent wearing them when you had this wreck (see i did search) i wear mine everytime i put the car in gear. people tend to forget that we survived car crashes before airbags. anyways i didnt put this up to discuss safety of my choices, i put it up to discus how to go about making MY choices and desires for my ride a reality.
UPDATE: heard from NRG, they have one for yotas and scions they claim will work, a little more expensive then i expected, and i wasnt exactly looking for a quick release setup...oh and grant just told me they dont research hubs for any airbag equiped cars (doomed to fail in the future that way imho) so thats where im at...
i remember reading about it, but i also remember reading it was like 900 bucks! i can do a super nice wheel, hub adapter and pair of custom seats for that...
but if someone comes across current info please post it up, oh i dont want a celica wheel, or supra, or something like that, i want somethng not stock.
i was hoping i would hear from someone who had changed their to an aftermarket type, im actually hoping i can get a grant hub to work, less expensive, good quality (used em in muscle cars), and they make adapters ro run other brands of wheels on their hubs including momo and 2 others i believe) nrg makes a nice setup but it will take over 200 before i can even mount a wheel...lol
one of the big things im worried about is if i dont have a drivers side airbag installed, will it keep the passenger side from working should the worst happen?
i dont know about the wheel and all but you can paint the whole *huge frikan colum* of you want =) lol very cheap way to make it look better i painted the lil section that the key hole is in and it came out great. **note that wile i do this and that my camry still has a cracked windshild and a fuc** up front end due to my aunts retarded self*

yup...that's the worst part about it...if there isn't a proper signal from the driver's side airbag, it will turn the entire srs system off. so that means the passenger' side airbag won't work either...
as for getting sportier steeringwheels....just stick with the other 3-spoke toyota ones such as off the celica, corolla s, camry se, gs, is, etc. they should all work. All of the steeringwheels themselves fit all other toyotas/lexus's, and the only difference is in the airbags. At this point though, I'm convinced that even the two stage systems work on the single stage srs systems.
I actually have a 3-spoke one that I haven't installed yet off of a gs, if you wan to try it, I can sell it for cheap

well for any who were keeping up with this i hit one little snag, i love my cruise control, and its built in the wheel, i have an idea how to remedy it i just need to find good wire schematics, run the on/off to one toggle and the up/down portion to a 3 position momentary on/off/momentary on toggleassuming i can find a plug under the dash to plug into it should be easy, otherwise ill use those crimp taps that let you tap into an existing wire without cutting it or anything..
