CV half axles for 93 camry

So my wife's 93 XLE's passenger side CV outer boot is busted AGAIN!

This was a NAPA reman not older than 1.5yrs and maybe 20K on it. I was told by them last week that the warranty is 1yr or 12K Mi. From looking online, Autozone's warranty seems similar? I'm in CA, so I wonder if this warranty varies from state to state? Can anyone recommend where to get an axle with a decent warranty?

I'm assuming it's not that easy to change the boots on these particular Toyota half axles because you may need a press to get the inner joint off? Is that true?

thanks

If the axle's fine but the boot is torn then just drive it until the axle needs replacing.

Huh, that's odd. Autozone says they have a LLT warranty.

Correct, but that warranty can have specific limitations for a part. It's not spelled out on the Autozone site. I'll have to phone to find out I guess.

i have a napa axle on my car for the past 2 years and the boots still look like new. if you caught the broken boot not too long after it broke, just replace the boot. its not hard to do and you can probably do so without popping the axle out of the transmission.

Local place had the same problem on my wife's '93. Couldn't get it apart to replace the boot so had to put in a whole reman unit. In the process of doing that the ABS sensor failed. Turned into a real production. Next time I'll try split boots and do it myself.

Well, I ended up going to Napa on the weekend and priced the boot kit replacements. Their pricing blew me away! About $9 per boot kit including the clamps and the grease. That's more than $7 cheaper than anywhere else I've looked. That's even cheaper than their online price which leads me to think it was a price mistake or something. So I bought an inboard and outboard boot kit and replaced them myself. Now I don't know if I would ever do it again rather than replace the half-axle with a reman'ed. I had the GKN style CV joints on this, so it was fairly easy to get the inner CV joint off the axle, and it wasn't necessary to pull the whole thing out of the differential. However, I ended up having the inner joint come apart on me. I should have stuck something on the top of the joint to prevent this, but live and learn. It took me at least an hour to get the joint back together. And of course, I was covered in CV grease! I guess I would be a lot better at it next time. The joints themselves looked fine, so I guess I did catch it early.
