Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
while Im walking around killing time waiting for my turn in the queue. I hear a voice saying "excuse me". At first i ignored it. Then I realize the man in the car calling me. I walk towards the passenger window and there is a guy sitting there in the drivers seat with his wife next to him feeding her baby which is in her arms. I'm like "yes? how can I help you?" i knew automatically that he's gonna ask for "gas money" cause he is travelling for another 500 miles and ain't got any cash. So he starts by "hi, me and my wife were travelling back to X (400 miles away) and our car broke down and we had to take it to the mechanic and ended up paying around 200 bucks to get it fixed, and now I have zero cash, and I was just wondering if you can lend me some money so I can go back to were i came from". Now he was asking for atleast 40 bucks to fill up his 90's benz. I ussually give a bit of lose change or 10 bucks to people who just ask for it and seem like they need it. I know they might not need it, but i'de rather give them 10$ than feel guilty all day about it. This is the 3rd or 4th time someone stops me and asks me for "gas money". the first time it was a saudi which seemed decent and was real polite and told me he has no money to go back to saudi. I gave him around 20$ cause he said it straight to the face "i don't have money and i would be grateful if u help me out". But the guy today had to tell me about spending 200 bucks on the mechanic and i don't know what and sat and told me a story for 2 to 3 mins. When he was done talking. I said "okay, so you told me u don't have money cause u spent the money on fixing ur car? right? okay, now show me the reciept that the mechanic gave you and i'll give you as much as u need, actually, i'll give you 200$, which u spent on fixing ur car". All of a sudden, he doesn't know where the reciept is, and he's all nervous. I told him "listen to me, if u told me u needed money because u have no gas to go back to oman i wouldv'e glady given you as much as u need (even though im short on cash this money from after spending 1000 bucks on my camry as some of u might know) but because you lied to me and made up a fixing your car and spending 200 bucks story, i won't give you anything anymore". then he was like "i did not lie to you, blablabla, i have no money to refuel my tank because i spent it on fixing the car. i told him "okay, i have a great idea, im gonna be hear for atleast 20 mins while i wait for my car to be washed, i'll be sitting right over there (pointed to the waiting area) as soon as you find the reciept, come to me and i'll go pull out money from the atm and give you as much as you need to get to your location. I walked away feeling kinda bad, but i hope i did the right thing. Just thought i'de share while my camry was at the car wash

Good on you, brother. Me too, but so many people I know look the other way, or give some rude put-down comment. I travelled Asia heavily 2000-2004 & gave enough for a meal to anyone who asked for money. To not do so is a crime against humanity & the Gods.
Probably handled the best way you could, if the guy needed help, then his bullshit didn't do him any favours.
I don't give money unless it's for charity or for homeless or needy people. People who can't afford gas already have a car in the first place and therefore don't qualify for needy. Absolutely ridiculous. I would have told him about less fortunate people then him and turned him away. He should be paying you for having to make you sit through his life story...
you know to be honest that has never happen to me well other than the crack heads that ask for a quarter to by food.
i guess you did the right thing i don't know tho if i would of done the same since his family was in the car, you were very wise in asking for a receipt you gotta have one of those if the story is true. also is it from experience that you asked for the receipt

I thought of asking for the receipt while the man kept babbling... Next time im gonna ask for a receipt, check the car plate to see if its foreign and ask for his license and registration to see his place of residence! If what the driver says is true i'll be really more than happy to assist him in as much money as he needs to get home safely.

I've been asked twice for gas money in Qc. First one was a hippie back from a trip to Newfoundland in a beat up 91 Corolla that needed about 10$. The car was full of bags and luggage so it seemed legit. Toyota fellowship choked me up and I put 10$ of gas in his car. He gave me a joint and took off. Apparently they thought about bringing a lot of homegrown weed, but not enough money for gas, a proper hippie, no scam, he was the real deal.
Second time was a suspicious looking old man that smelled like cat piss. I did the same thing I did with the other hippie : "Yeah no problem, just park your car near the pump over there and open up your filler cap, I'll put it in, I don't have any cash on me." He didn't want to do it, he wanted me to give him 10$ because he was out of gas a couple streets away. I said not a problem, lemme get my jug, so I popped up my trunk and he started blabbering about how he didn't want me to lose any time over this. "It'll be my pleasure", by now I knew he was lying but I wanted to push it a bit and see what he would do so I put the pump in my gasoline jug and started pouring in and he just slowly walked away! Sorry brah, gas money is gas money.
I think you did the right thing by asking for a receipt. What I do is ask them to park their car near the pump to do it myself, when they refuse, it's bye bye.

Man, if I was on that road with my prize TTZ I would not be impressed!
Ricardo, without exaggeration, the fast and furious vid is what badawins do here as a hobby sometimes. They consider it as a sport, have a lot of fun and put so many lives at risk. Foolish, i know but ive only seen it happen once or twice, dont worry, its not a everday thing. Dubai is lovely and expensive:P. as for the bicycle dude burning out on what seems an oily surface, i guess its not hard when you have so much oil in this part of the world, haha. S
