3rd Generation Radiator

There is a crack on top of the radiator, Can this be fixed? Is the radiator made of plastic? Where would you recommend a radiator? from junkyard, autostore, dealer? How hard is to remove it, What type of coolent does it use? It is not the green one, it is redish/orange.

I had the same thing happen to my radiator. I was able to patch it with QuikSteel until I could get it replaced. I just took it to my Toyota dealer and replaced it for $265 (aftermarket radiator).

If you do a search you should be able to find some good DIY info. It seems like a pretty easy job if you have the time and a little mechanical ability. You should be able to get a radiator on eBay for less than $100.

I replaced the radiator in my 98 last december and it was like $119. I did the labor and even reused the drained coolant. It is way easy to DIY as the manual is on line on this site. There is little reason NOT to do this yourself. There are two big hoses, a pair of AT trannt cooler lines and then the mounting hardware (probably 2 - 4 bolts IIRC)

Also, call the local radiator shops and they should be able to get you an after market one with a good warranty that is brand new.

Jeff

I took mine to an aftermarket rad shop which pulled, cleaned, replaced the top and reinstalled for under $200. Put another 100K on it since then.

Try the seller 'Radiator Doctor' on eBay. Good quality US made radiators with lifetime warranty for less than $100 shipped. There are ton's of other sellers on eBay selling similar products. Shop around!

The replacement is pretty easy to do yourself. I would highly recomend getting one of the all metal aftermarket replacement radiators on the market.

Never a bad idea to change the hoses while you are at it. It may not be necessary though if yours are firm and have no cracks.
