Hi all. I want some additional bass response, currently have 6.5 inch 4way up front, 6x9" 4way rear. Nice enough, but no real bass. I don't want mega bass thump, just rich full notes. I play 320bps MP3s from a DVD so I'm already losing the bottom end (Sidenote - 20 dvds = 1000 CDs ripped at top MP3 quality - my collection is always available in the car now). I may make a unit that can service both cars, plug and play, although may still do both individually. Thanks!
Single 10 should be just fine for your application.

What brand of speakers do you have? Do you know their frequency responses? If you want more low frequency punch, you'll need a speaker that can go about 25Hz or lower. I have Pioneer TS-D701P (280 watts) 6.75" D-series speakers in the doors, and Pioneer TS-D691R (350 watts) 6X9" D-series speakers in the rear deck. The TS-D701P's can hit 25Hz, and the TS-D691's can hit 22Hz. Really good bass without a sub. You'll just need a good 4ch amp to power them. I'm running them off a 4ch 1000w amp. I'm not into mega bass either, and I wanted to keep all of my trunk space. If you want to keep your trunk space, upgrade your speakers, if you don't mind giving up some trunk, go with any small sub/box combo. Another somewhat space saving option would be an Infinity BassLink II sub.
the difference in size doesnt determine the loudness .... the larger the woofer, the lower the notes it can hit
so a 10 or 12 is going to give you the best RANGE of bass, assuming you listen to rap/hip-hop, pop, and rock (techno is a little bit different, and classical doesnt really have much bass)

The larger the woofer, the more air it moves..
A 12", equal wattage subwoofer will be louder than a 10" of equal wattage.
I ran a single 10" sealed in my last car. Loved it. It didn't need a lot of juice to run it, it sounded clean, and still hit low enough for what I listen to. (rock and country).
If what you listen to is all natural instruments, then a 10 is plenty. If you listen to rave/electronica/hip hop, you may want something that will go lower frequency-wise. But for a good, clean, "in the car" bass sound, a single 10 is great.
The only difference is volume and cost (unless you go cheap, you get what you pay for.. most of the time), but the 10 will be louder and have more output compared to the 8, and remember box is 90% of the build.
