Gen3-92-96 Transmission Issues

I was wondering if Forum members owning Gen 3, years 1992-96 Camry's using the 4cyl engine have had any automatic transmission issues or problems.

That has got to be the most vague question I've ever seen. Of course people have. What is your problem, and have you used the search feature?

Was told my transm was bad at 99,800 miles

Have used the search function and did not find out much. I was told by my mechanic ( not a Toyota Dealer) that I had metal filings in my trans pan. Occassionally my transmission upshifts hard or has delayed upshifts. I have a 4cylinder LE 96 wagon. He quoted me $4,219 for a re-mfg transm with oil cooler labor and parts. I was wondering if I'm getting ripped off. My question is: Has anyone replaced their Auto Transm on the 1992- 1996 -4 cyl Camry's during their ownership of these vehicles. It seems odd that my AT would go bad at 99,800 miles as I always had the ATfluid flushed every 15,000 miles.

Kelly Blue Book for the car is about $3800 depending on where you live, not including bad trans which would lower it more. So do you think that $4219 for a transmission is a good business decision? Beware if the mechanic offers to buy the car for a really low price.

I got my AT replaced about 4 months ago, the car was at 150,000. I had problems with the transmission at around 120,000, it wouldn't go into 1st gear on its own.

When it started to get close to 150k, the car was acting up bad, it felt like a slipping clutch, but turned out to be a cylinder not firing due to a bad spark plug.

Nonetheless, i got the transmission replaced, and all in all it cost me $2000.
