2 different Gen 4 trannys feel totally different........

So since the family's all together, my 85 yr old grandmother has a '99 (I have a '98) and while mine has 138,000 miles on it, hers has 72,000.

Well, she recently had her rear struts replaced & I wanted to see how her new struts felt compared to my tired originals.

What I reeeally noticed as different was how her trans shifted. It kind of "sliiiiiiiiiiiiiiides" from 1st to 2nd & 2nd to 3rd. Then 4th gear shifts like mine w/ a solid shift.

Mine is totally the opposite. Mine shifts fairly solidly in all gears, unless I'm deep in the gas pedal, then I'll noticed that it can slide a little bit, but for average driving, all gears shifts are fairly quick & solid.

Is one worse/better than the other??

yours probably shifts harder because its got double the wear & tear ....

no real problems unless it starts clunking or slipping

Try changing the transmission fluid in both cars .... personally, I would remove the pan and clean out the sludge. ... Just drain and refill one time.
Then retest.

Well, that's the really funny part..........

Ours have both been maintained meticulously.

Flushed every 30K!!!! Both done at the dealer!!! (Different dealers, though)

And, I actually prefer the solid shift of mine. I don't recall mine ever "sliding" between gears so much as hers. ???

what is "sliding"? as in smooth shifts?

that could also just be the result of the ecu learning her "grandma" driving and being more used to changing gears at lower rpms, or not just dumping a gear when stomped on

yup...that it does...

and it can be really annoying too....like when me or my sis drives my mom's 2003 camry v6...the thing's got power...but it just won't downshift for us sometimes unless we really stomp it since it's used to my mom's more gentle driving

Do Gen 3 ECU's learn? My friend told me its a newer thing, and older cars don't have it.

It could be related to fluid level as well, and the adjustment in the kickdown cable.

If the ECU learns your driving style, would that mean that it would be better if I gunned it all the time so that it knows that I'm looking for power? Or if I wanted to get good gas mileage and drove it slowly, would the ECU shift at lower RPM's?
