2000 Camry does not Idle

I have a 2000 camry 4 cyl with about 75000 mi. It ran fine and then in the morning would not idle. If I hold down the gas pedal it will run at 800-1000 RPM no problem but when I take my foot of the pedal it dies. I sprayed starting fluid around the intake manifold and head to check for air leaks but found none. Could it be a temp sensor? Any ideas? Thanks

My '98 did that just this very morning.

It's intermittent..........(happens maybe once a month or two)..........and I don't know what it is.

Typically, I'll have to try & start it a couple times w/ the gas pedal depressed about halfway & then it'll kick in & start idling normally.

(choke?) or whatever it is that causes normal idle at startup is bad/faulty??

Seem to recall some thread that mentioned the necessity to just replace VSV ... because it could not be tested reliably.
Do you know what if any engine codes are being set? Try Autozone or some parts shop if you do not have a scan tool.

Are you saying once it warms up it idles properly?

Have you tried cleaning the throttle body and IAC?

I have to agree with touringcamry. Clean the throttle body with spray throttle body cleaner, paying particular attention to spraying the cleaner into the square or diamond shaped port leading to the idle air control valve. That port is at the base of the throttle body. You will see it as soon as you remove the big tube leading to the throttle body.

Apparently cleaning is improved if you can cycle the valve. Have a helper keep the engine running. Disconnect or loosen the IAC connector then connect and disconnect as you spray the IAC to cycle the valve.

Went to the auto store and bought cleaner, sprayed throttle body. Seems to be fine now. Thank you so much Touringcamry, Stillrunning, Mike Gerber and others for your fine troubleshooting skills.
