No, it is not an automatic thing. Something that effects emmissions is out of range and setting off the check engine light (also called the MIL or malfunction indicator light). Go to Autozone and they will read the code for you for free. Then report back here with the code and someone will be able to point you in the right direction. If you don't have Autozone in your area call around to other auto parts stores and ask if they offer this free service.

O, i always thought that the newer cars were set to go off.

It's alright tho. it just so happens that the car was going to the mechanic today anyways.
