Hi, does anyone can give me a guideline for normal RPM (Camry I4 Gen4) under the following conditions: (I think this can give ppl a hint when in doubt) Thanks!
1. Starting in cold weather (0'C)
2. Accelerating from 0 to around 20-25mph smoothly
3. Start after stopping at stop signs
4. Steady highway drving 60-70mph
Hmm, when I start my car in the cold my RPM's jump to about 1800rpms; I hope this is normal.
mine does too.
warm goes down to about 700 rpms.

So here is why I find a bit strange:
when car starts cold, the rpm is kind of high (~1500) with some proportional noise from engine under hood. But once change gear to R or D the rpm suddenly drops to ~800-1000 with smaller significantly smaller noise from engine.
Just curious: why RPM can suddenly drop that much when change to R or D? This may be a silly qn but I really do not know. THanks.
