3rd & 4th Generation (1992–1996 & 1997–2001)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 1992-1996 & 1997-2001
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
would someone with a '92 Camry LE (or similar) check something for me? When you turn on the lights, do any of the red tail lights on the trunk lid (next to the white back-up lights) come on?
My the red lights do come on when I press the brakes, but not when I turn on the lights, instead, my "tail light" signal on the instrument panel does come on. So I'm wondering if I have bad contact or severed wire or something similar.
Driving home last night I watched the cars, and I beleive I saw a Gen 3 Camry with the trunk lid lights on (and it was not braking). Now I only have to figure out why they don't work (bulbs and fuses are fine).
They're dual filament bulbs (for brake lights and running lights) so you need new bulbs!
As I mentioned earlier, the bulbs are fine. Besides, it is quite unlikely that two bulbs burn out in the same time.
Thanks for the photo! Now I just have to find some time to check the wires and the light failure sensor. (I'm probably gonna try to fix it it in the weekend.)
I've found the problem today. It was indeed a broken wire in the harness that goes to the trunk lid. I made a quick fix today by stripping the wire ends and clamping them together. I'll make a proper fix tomorrow.
I was thinking about actually making those lights come on JUST when I brake, because I don't like 4 lights on the back all the time, just 2....so this just fed my idea more
Lol, I don't like the 4 lights either it makes it look less sporty, which the Camry doesn't need. It does look cleaner IMO with just the sides, which I have on my DX
OK, so just cut the green wire that goes to the trunk lid. You have to live with the warning on the dash though.
In my opinion, when the Toyota engeneers designed the the visibility of the car, they designed it with those lights on, so I wouldn't risk having them off.

You know a lot of Camry's don't have the center lights. If a dumbass doesn't see you they won't see you because two more 1156 bulbs.

I know, but maybe they are different in other sense, too. Maybe the other two lights are brighter. Maybe they have a different angle/cover/whatever. Maybe even the metal center of the trunk lid reflects light better than the red plastic thing. I'm not saying any of these are true, I'm just saying it is not impossible, and for me, safety and piece of mind is worth more than sexy looks.
yeah if they see they will see you. i have 4 brake lights. the spoiler, 3rd braking lights, and the 2 braking lights on the corner. and i've calm so close to getting rear ended a few times. its not that your brake lights are bright enough nor do you not have enough. it the over driver that dont pay attention is tail gating.. thus if you get rear ended its not your fault.
