3rd Generation 94 4cyl No Start Problem

My wife's 94 4cyl auto Camry w/255k miles died at a red light and wouldn't start back up. We had it towed back to the house were I started to troubleshoot. I have pulled all 4 plugs and verified that all four are firing via ground to the block. The timing belt is obviously intact, though I pulled the upper cover back to get a visual reinforcement.

So the next logical step is that its not getting any fuel right? Wrong, pump runs with key switch. I pulled the fuel pressure regulator off and cranked it, which resulted in some high pressure fuel spillage. I removed the plugs again after several failed cranking attempts to find them SOAKED in fuel.

Air + Fuel + Spark = Combustion in my book. I'm thinking the MAP sensor is bad causing too much/little fuel to be delivered to the cylinders. Anyone else had any similar issues or known problems?

Hmm, I suppose it could be but I doubt it. I think I'm going to the junkyard for a few sensors to play with.

crank sensor is critical to engine running .... cam sensor is not.

not completely sure if engine coolant temperature is essential ...probably.

Right, but this has a distributor. Does it even have a crank sensor?

The 94 does not have a crank or cam sensor, distributor does all the work. Check to make sure the crank/cam timing is still ok and the timing belt did not jump a few notches on the pulleys some how.

Does the engine start when you press on the gas pedal?

Nope, tried holding the gas to the floor, but by then it could have already been flooded.

When you verified that all 4 plugs were firing, did you see a bright blue spark or just an orange spark? Bright blue indicates a good strong spark. Orange indicates a weak spark, which can be caused by a weak coil; a common problem with these engines.

Try spraying some starter fluid into the air filter chamber. If the engine tries to start it suggests a problem with the fuel system. If it doesn't try to start it suggests an electrical problem. This is by no way fool proof but it is helpful. If you use either be very sparing.
