engine shut down

I have a 96 camry, 4 cyl, auto, with 246000 mi. I got it from a friend a year ago and it has performed perfectly until the other day. I was coming home from work and the engine shut down for about 2 sec., check engine light came on, but it restarted, then ran perfectly. I was driving about 35 mph and didn't have to hit the starter. The next day I was going to work and it happened again. This time it acted like it was running out of gas and bucked a few times before it totally quit. I coasted into a driveway and finally got it restarted by continuing to hold the starter while it would fire every once in a while. It was cutting out like crazy for about 100 yards but then ran perfectly the rest of the way to work and back home. I was afraid to drive it to autozone to get the codes read, so I bought a new fuel filter and fuel pump and installed them. The car starts fine and idles perfectly. I then started to go to autozone to get the codes read. 200 feet away from the house the car died at about 20 mph. It restarted immediatly and I drove to autozone for the code reading. It ran perfectly. Autozone found a P0110 (IAT sensor) and a P0340 (cam sensor condition). I DONT BELIEVE THE 96 CAMRY 5SFE HAS A CAMSHAFT POSITION SENSOR!! Does it? It has a distributor. About 3 months ago I replaced the timing belt.
Anyone have any Ideas?

Thank you very much,
Larrye

If the engine has a cam sensor it would be at the front of the engine where the cam pulley is. You may see the item or wirings running to the front timing belt cover location.

It does have a crank position sensor, there is a wire clipped onto the plastic timing belt cover, you will see it under the alternator.

The best I can tell there is no camshaft position sensor.
This car is driving me nuts! I drove it last night and all was well, running great, idle perfect. Then it shuts down. I tried to restart, it would fire but like only one cylinder, so no start. I waited about 3 min hit the starter and it immediately started and ran perfectly again. What could be the cause of this inttermitent engine shut down?

Thanks,
larrye

I take my previous post back partially, you have also 2 crank angle sensors, which I believe are integrated into the distributor, or mounted behind the distributor cap on the cylinder head. The crank angle sensor is also inside the distributor.

What I would do first is check the wire connections, and see if there is any damaged wiring, loose / wet wiring etc.

Hajoca,
Thanks for the info. I will check the wires. The code was for camshaft sensor not crank. I cleared the codes before I took it out for its last test drive, it shut down but no check engine light came on.

could it be the coil?

Thanks,
larrye
