where is the neutral safety switch located in a 1999 Camry?

I have a 1999 Camry 2.2L 4 cyl. automatic and have been having start up problems for a few weeks. The car does not always crank at start up. The problem was sporadic at first but seems to have gradually gotten worse. Almost every time the car is started, I have to shift the gear from Park to Drive/Neutral/Reverse and go back into Park, sometimes multiple times before starting successfully. From what I have read, it appears that the problem is in the park-neutral (or neutral-safety) switch. Where exactly is this located? I have both Haynes and Chilton manuals but they don't have decent photos/description.

A photo had been posted in one of the threads some time ago. I am having trouble seeing it and would appreciate someone posting it again!

As far as the switch itself, is an adjustment all that's typically required or is it common enough for the switch to go bad? These switches are not cheap to replace as I am finding out!

Thanks for all the help.

S.

The switch located behind the shift lever on the trans. Follow the shift cable to the lever and look behind it. Might try taking the switch apart and cleaning the contacts, finding one at a junkyard, etc. Also check for loose wires.

might want to try taking the cable off the switch and readjusting.do this before removing switch. make sure the switch is all the way down before putting the cable back on. also lube the nut and bolt and everything else. makes for smoother gear selecting.

Thanks

I sorta had this problem just today with my 95 Camry... and car started right after I moved from N to D and back to N. Hope it doesn't get worse.

Thanks for these posts, at least I know what exactly is probably wrong.

If it does get worse, I guess I'll clean the parts as suggested.
