Exclamation ECT, O/D, and Rev Limiter. READ BEFORE YOU LOOK LIKE A TOOL PLEASE!

Ok, I am sSick and tired of people responding to threads with misleading and incorrect info. SO READ!!!! So next time a New Member askes a question on it, simply refer them here, so
they get the correct info!

O/D Dont’s:

1: O/D off during acceleration is retarded, end of story.

2: O/D off during cruising, or just normal driving, IS STUPID, period.

O/D Do’s:

1: O/D off should be used with the anticipation of passing at highway speed. It gives you that split second more power (Not needing to downshift) for the pass.

2: O/D off should be used if going up a steep hill at highway speeds where you start to loose speed.

ECT Don’t’s:

1: Normal Acceleration with PWR on. If your accelerating normal, why in hell would you have PWR on? Dumb.

2: Normal Driving. Read above.

3: WOT with PWR. See video’s below. NO DIFFERENCE!!!!!!!

ECT Do’s:

1: Heavy Acceleration but not at WOT. PWR will have it shift at a higher RPM for a smoother and faster acceleration.

2: Heavy traffic. I.E., New York City highways. PWR causes the tranny to downshift to a lower gear, at a higher RPM, for a MUCH faster acceleration. See video's below.

ECT PWR and O/D OFF

1: Ok, just see video below and look at RPM's and maybe you'll see why your MPG is so bad.

REV Limiter Discussed:

1Q: Will hitting the Rev limiter cause my engine to explode?
1A: No, it will not. The Rev Limiter (6750 RPM’s on the 1MZ Gen 3) is there to PREVENT damage. If it would cause damage, the limiter would be set lower.

2Q: What does the Rev Limiter sound like?
2A: See video below.

3Q: Since hitting the Rev Limiter is not going to kill the engine, can I do it all the time to look cool?
3A: Yeah, but enjoy looking like a Tool when you end up doing it so many times, you DO kill the engine. Redline is there for a reason ya know! It’s normally ok once in a while* but not all the time.

* Disclaimer, If you blow the engine, TN nor any members are responsible for your stupidity. In no way is it good to hit the Rev Limiter, or recommended in any way. Under most circumstances, it does not hurt, but still should not be done.

WOT with OD on and ECT normal

WOT with ECT power and OD off

Flooring at 32mph with ECT normal

Flooring at 32mph with ECT power

REV LIMITER

look like chicago/harbor-freight tool? or a craftsman or kobalt tool? cuz craftsman and kobalt tools are sexy. you've officially got way too much time on your hands now adam.

jk. nicely done indeed. show them tools.

edit yo: btw, just to be on the cool (or non-"tool") side for sure, just leave your ect on normal and keep your overdrive on (that means no amber-colored "o/d off" light on the dashboard... tool). your ecu is not that bad in normal mode and compensates for plenty of conditions fine enough with the pedal -angle + engine rpm + load algorithms without the need for teh "pwr" button.

I would have to disagree with that....the ecu does adjust fairly well for a person's driving style. But since it IS a camry and the camry was designed for more economical driving, the ECU will NEVER let you red-line the car or even come close to it without the PWR button down. So for the ones of us who drive more aggressively, or just want to have better throttle response, the PWR button is a must.

Back when I was auto, I always had the PWR button down. and if somehow it turned off (somebody pressed the button by accident), I would know right away since the driving style becomes very very different

If you want to "shift" on your own with an AUTO Tranny, you can have O/D off just to get what the "PWR" functions does on a gen 3 but its a drain on your gas, trust me I've done it just to see how fast i could go on the Long Island Expressway
