3rd & 4th Generation (1992–1996 & 1997–2001)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 1992-1996 & 1997-2001
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
Ok, I asked about this last year, but never got a conclusive answer. So...here it goes again.
I got a hold of a 3-spoke steering wheel from an 01 Corolla S. I want to swap it into my 96 Camry, but I still don't know how to wire up the dual-stage airbag into the single-stage clockspring of my car. Any ideas?
Just in case, here are the original threads involving this question.
The second thread has pics of the actual steering wheel I have...
naw...on two separate occasions, I had possession of a gen5 steeringwheel with an airbag, which is dual stage. and on both occasions I ended up selling it.
I WAS going to try the dual stage wheel/bag that I had this time, but Adam wouldn't let me try hooking it up to his SRS system (would need splicing) to see if I could just hook up the high impact bag and see if the system would take it, and my car's a 1000kms away....so I sold it.
As for Tony, he has the celi wheel, but the celi wheel is a single stage so it works with no problems (except for cruise control).
And uiblame - if you have hte bag and everything, just splice it and try it. the worste that would happen is your SRS will throw the light which means that it doesn't work. Be a pioneer and let us know my theory was the same as yours- just ignore the low impact bag
as for the clockspring, your clockspring should work just fine, after all, you'll only be connecting to one plug anyway

Yes, finally...some encouraging words! I'll have some spare time after finals week. I try it out then. Now for a new question...I'm guessing the red plug on the back of the bag is the high speed charge, and should be the one I splice into the clockspring wiring, right?
I would just go with the single stage and call it a day. Wiring the dual stage sounds like a pain in the ass. A few people on CL have tried it with the newer dual stage airbags from IS250's on the sc3/400's and had no luck.

I would go with a single stage, but untill then, I'll just have to try it with the parts I have. Unless, you know where I can get a single stage bag that looks/fits just like the one pictured above...
I have the celica steering wheel on my car and just spliced the wires for the airbag. It was working fine for awhile but after a couple months the airbag light came on and I just left it.

I'd LOVE to have that one, but I don't have that kind of money right now. Between bills, and my '65 mustang project, I have no more Camry cash to spend. Never have been or ever will be a "balla", "gangsta", "gangster", uber or otherwise, so I'll just have to work with what I've got.
Unless you'll agree to a low monthly payment plan outside of ebay...LOL.
hey george, isn't it awkward having the cruise control on the other side?

any cruise control is a luxury....it wasn't until I took a trip to montreal with my gf that I realized that after my tranny swap I didn't have cruise control
as for the single stage bags idea....it's a great idea, and if I had been able to get my hands on a single-stage bag for a decent price, I would have replaced my steeringwheel/airbag.
but the problem is that most people who mod cars mod older cars, and all the way up to gen4, in the case of the camry, they are single stage, as are a lot of the older toyotas, so they are high on demand and cost more than pretty penny to say the least.....
