Auto tranmmission question?

Hey fellas i have a question about the automatic transmission on my 98 Camry. Today i just realized that i can shift from reverse to drive without pushing the button. Is that right? I can also shift from Drive into Neutral without pressing the button too. Is this normal?

Yes it is normal. You can do the following shifts without the button under normal conditions:
R-N
N-D
D-N
2-D
L-2

It's a safety feature, and all automatics I have driven do this too. Say the car keeps accelerating and will not stop, all you have to do is push the shift lever forward, and let the motor rev. All the power steering, power brakes etc will keep working long enough for you to get to the side of the road.

There have been instances of New Toyota Tacomas doing this very thing. I saw a news report on it, and it pissed me off, because the news crew used scare tactics to trick everyone with a Tacoma that they will die. The newscast never mentioned the proper steps of "what to do if...". I hate the media.

NOT N-D! You need to press the button to go from Neutral to Drive. The others sound right though.

On my 95 Camry LE I can move it from neutral to drive without pushing the button. Same was true for my 87 Chevy Nova and my dad's 02 Camry LE. I think it's so that when you are backing up and want to put it back into drive you just have to pull on the handle.
