Question about headlight auto off when key is removed

Just something I noticed:
Sometimes the headlights are auto off when I remove the key after arriving parking lot; and sometimes removing key will not auto turn off the headlight?

The way it should work is:
You remove the key before the door is opened
You open the door
The lights automatically turn off.
This will not work if you open the door before you remove the key, or if your door sensor is bad.

my headlights turn off when i turn the car off and open the door, even if they are in the on position

I can turn the car off with the headlights on and the door open and the headlights will go off.....though I DO have a problem with my door switch/wiring so you have to make sure the headlights DO go off.
