Question 1999 Camry I4 Camshaft position sensor

Hello everyone. I'm new to this forum and I have a couple of questions. Thanks.

How do I install the camshaft position sensor? I have the haynes repair manual, but its not very helpful. I found the current sensor and it wasn't even attached to anything, just hanging by the wiring. I'd like to attach it properly and make sure it isn't working properly before I purchase a new sensor.

If I need to replace the sensor, where can i find a Camshaft position sensor for my '99 Camry 5SFE. I can only find sensors for the the V6 1MZFE.

The camshaft sensor is installed adjacent to the camshaft, so that it can sense the position of the cam gear. You won't be able to see the location where it should be installed, due to the proximity of the upper timing belt cover. There is a diagram on p. 32 of the I4 mechanical section of the online repair manual. As I recall, there is one bolt, and also a stud of some sort. It may be that the bolt is also one of the timing cover bolts.
It was 6 months ago when I worked on this ..... but it wasn't difficult, even though you can't actually see what you are doing. .... Make sure that the connector is clean and snugly installed before you bolt the sensor in place.

There was a previous post a few weeks back that mentioned his mechanic put it in backwards. Evidently it is possible to mount either way so pay attention to the orientation of the original before you remove it.

Where can I find this?

I did a search for a "repair guide" but nothing came up. Thanks so much for your input. Much appreciated.

Refer to the Gen 4 section ... and then the I4 mechanical chapter.

If you have a problem with the download .... then use IE browser.

I see that you have purchased a new sensor .... this may not be necessary if the old one is actually still good. There are some resistance specs somewhere.....Maybe I can find them.

If you have an ohmeter, measure the resistance across the two cam sensor wires.... should read between 835 and 1400 ohms .... cold.

Yeah, I realized I should have tested the current sensor before buying the new one. I'll still test the one thats inside the engine. If it works, I'll either return or sell the new one. I got such a good deal on it, I couldn't resist snatching it up.

Look at page 32.

To make it easier to reach the sensor, should I remove the Timing Belt covers? Will that mean I have to remove the timing belt as well? I was trying to avoid having to do that.

If you have trouble with bolting the sensor in place ...it might be worth the effort to place the car on jackstands .... safely .... and take a look at the location from underneath. Just get a light and see if you can get an idea as to where it goes .... Qslim's picture shows the situation much better than the repair manual.

A mirror on a stick would really hit the spot here. You could probably get one at sears for a few bucks. Good to have in your arsenal...

Hey guys, back again. I bought that mirror on a stick and I received the new sensor in the mail. One last question: The old sensor was just hanging by the wire and the new sensor didn't come with the bolt. What size bolt is used to secure the sensor?

Seems like it was just one of the upper timing cover bolts .... Take one out of the cover and see if it fits. ... Not sure about the overall length .... If there is a longer bolt, that would probably be it.

The bolt for the timing belt cover was the same size I needed for the sensor. The check engine light is finally gone!

Thanks to everyone for the input, it is much appreciated...
