3rd & 4th Generation (1992–1996 & 1997–2001)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 1992-1996 & 1997-2001
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
You might add a few hp, but you will likely lose low end torque. And that means it will actually accelerate slower from a stop. It will be louder, for no reason, and it might resonate annoyingly.
Now the really bad part: If you get caught you will be fined.......Anywhere from $1,000 to $20,000. It depends on where you live.
Sure the odds of getting caught seem low, but don't risk it. Now your IP address can be traced back to you asking this question. Never underestimate the power of Big Brother.

I'm the biggest boss thatchu seen thus far! Baby, that's muh wi'zzard!
You will see very little gain in horsepower. The catalytic converters on today's cars are much less restrictive than those that first were put on cars in the 1970's. Doing this however, would greatly increase your emissions and if you have any emissions testing in your area, your car will not pass.
I'll add my two cents, i acutally did this once on my truck because it wasnt running right. And somebody convinced me it might be the cat converter that was plugged up. So i knocked the guts out, put it back on, and drove it like that for a while. a little bit more horsepower and freer revving but no huge gain and like the others were saying, probably not worth it. I bought a universal cat and just bolted that on at smog time, and just left it on and tossed the hollowed out one. Swapping it back and forth at smog check time or something, naw - too much work for me.
I dont know the smog laws in your state, but Here in Kalifornia they have begun using trailers at on ramps that measure your tailpipe emissions as you are waiting to get on the freeway! No fooling! They move the trailers around and if they detect bad emissions you get notified by mail by the state, and you can be sure its not a Hallmark greeting card either.
So i just leave the cat on as per the factory installation.

Are you for real? What, you think Chris Hanson is working with the FBI to catch people who try to circumnavigate the CARB restrictions? You sir, are paranoid.

It was a half-joke. "CARB" is the state of California, purposefully destroying (gutting), or removing your catalytic converter is a Federal crime. I'm actually not paranoid. Wait.....shhh.....did you hear that?
hehe

He lives in Tennesse, in the south I don't believe there are any states with regulations like that, nowhere else really just you Californians. As long as it moves you can get it inspected somewhere.

The Camry is a car that I can rip out someone's pride, stab it, beat it, and completely bash their egos, and it's so ridiculous that the person comes back with a hysterical laugh... ROFL They got trainlengthed by a Camry that in their mind, was a 18 sec car.
