Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
so its been raining and i notice that my break rotors are all rusted....since i've got 18" rims am i suppose to cover up the wheels or anything? will the rust effect anything and is it something serious??? and is there anything i can do to stop this from happening in the future??
I knew this kid back in high school. He actually painted his rotors because they were rusting out... He thought it was like painting calipers. Funny thing was he was in AUTO SHOP. Funniest thing ever.

Rotors are made from bare steel. That is, there is no plating or other rust preventative coating on them. They do come with some oil or cosmoline-lke coating from the factories, so they don't rust while in transit or on the auto parts stores shelves. These coatings should be removed with brake-clean before being installed on your car. Brake pads applied to brake rotors under hydraulic pressure, use friction to convert the car's motion in to heat. Rust perventing coatings on the rotors will interfere with the desired friction. The rust you are seeing is just surface rust that will be scrapped off by the brake pads the first couple of times you stop. As the others have said, this is perfectly normal. I have seen my car's rotors actually rust while I am washing the car. That will give you an idea of how fast the rust will occur in damp conditions.
