3rd Generation Rattling Door Trims - anyone know a fix?

Hi guys.

All the little metal peices fell off when i took of my door trim to replace my window regulator. I was wondering if there was a cheap solution to fix the trim so it does not rattle. So far, i have 3 ideas:

1. Double sided tape..... prob not gonna work..... but opinions welcome
2. Roof and Gutter sealent between the trim and the metal part of the door
3. Drilling holes into the metal parts of the door and using zip ties

If someone has a more effective (preferably cheaper) solution, I'd really like some advice. Alternatively, which would you do?

- i guess i can go to a wrecker and buy new trims.... but then i would need all 4 cause all of them are pretty stuffed... so don't really wanna do that.

Thanks in advance for ur help

I'm sorry, but it's not clear to me what happened with your door. What "little metal pieces" are you referring to. The ones at the bottom of the door panel with the plastic pins that go into the holes on the bottom of the door? Some pics might help.

Hi sorry about the lack of pics, I don't have a digital camera. I will see if i can get a hold of one. But yeah, I was talking baout the metal bits attached to the bottom of the door that clip into the plastic peices plugged into the holes on the bottom of the door?

OK. I pulled one of the door panels on my '95 LE recently. Apparently the inside of the door had gotten wet at some point. The fiber board where those metal clips attached had rotted and the clips pulled out.

Here's what I did.

I could see a good outline of the clips on the door panel because they had rusted. That way I knew exactly where they went. I took a utility knife and a small wood chisel and cut and scraped out that area in the shape of the clip and deep enough that the clip could sit in the opening and be flush with the door panel around it. Then I filled the area with epoxy, and pressed the clip into the epoxy. I let the door panel sit over night. Before reinstalling, I pulled the yellow plugs out of the door and attached them to the clips where they belong. Normally when you take the panel off, those plugs come out with the door panel. When reinstalling the door panel, those plugs are the last thing you press in after everything else is all set in place and aligned.

Hope that helps.

Not familiar with Areldite. If that's like an all purpose cement/adhesive, yeah, it'll probably work.

Don't know if they sell this down under but it ocurred to me that this is what I used, not epoxy....

Basically, you just want something that's going to bond to the door well, and hold the metal clip well. An all purpose contact adhesive should do that. I haven't had to take this particular door panel back off since I fixed it, so I can't say how well it will hold up to being pulled on, but it's definitely holding the panel tight while installed anyway.
