3rd Generation 5 Speed swap

********not responsible for you messing up your ride *********
this is from doing research and talking to other over the mast few months.
v6 5 speed
* 5-Speed Transmission (**E153**) *name of the v6 tranny
generation/year this tranny was present
92-93 camrys for the "older" e153 and then 97-2001 camrys and 99-2003 solaras, and then the aw22 mr2s
-92-93 V6 Camry/ES300
-solara 99-03
-camry 97-01
* Flywheel V6
-92-93 V6 Camry/ES300 .
-camry 97-01
-solara 99-03
* Clutch
-92-93 V6
-Camry 97-01
-solara 99-03
* Shifter assembly from
-4-cyl
-Camry or v6
universal from 3rd-5th gen camry *-*
* Shifter cables from
-4-cyl
-Camry v6 camry *-*
* Interior Shifter Trim piece from any manual Camry *-*
* both axle from what ever car you get the tranny from *-*
* clutch slave cylinder if it did not come with the tranny
* Clutch and Brake pedals universal 3rd-5th generation
* Clutch Master Cylinder from I4 Camry or v6 (better to get the v6 from what herd) a little molding is needed for the i4
* Center Console and E-brake handle universal3rd-5th generation Camry w/ Hand Brake *-*
* E-brake cable 3rd-5th generation w/ Hand-brake *-*
* OEM Flywheel, clutch, and transmission bolts
* 5 speed tranny mount and plate it's smaller than the auto *-*
************************************************** *****
********electrical requirements*****
******Reverse Light Sensor - This is also needed if you want your reverse lights to light up when you throw the car into reverse .There are two wires that you need to connect for this: Red w/ Blue Stripe and Orange w/ Blue Stripe.
*****Vehicle Speed Sensor - This sensor was a direct plug-in from the old automatic tranny to the new manual tranny.
****Custom Shift Solenoid Resistor Box - Without this resistor box, the ECU would sense a transmission malfunction, throw a CEL, and put the car into fail-safe mode (5 deg timing BTDC). (12 ohm, 22 watt) resistors wired in parallel. Using 10 ohm, 20 watt resistors got extremely hot, so It is recommend going with any resistance between 12-15 ohms and between 22-25 watts. Of course, it all depends on what sizes your local electronics store carries.
***note this is for the 3 gen camry which did not come with a 5 speed option***
***i4 did come with a manual ecu so this is not necessary ***
************************************************** *****
* The V6 camry flywheels are all the same from 92-00+
* The V6 manual transmissions from 92-00+ are the same (except for stronger synchros and maybe gear ratios)
* The E153 transmission on the V6 Camrys is the same as the E153 transmission on the MR2 Turbos except for the shift linkage orientation (FWD vs. RWD)
* Because of this.. all Limited Slip Differentials (LSD's) for the MR2 Turbo and 97+ Camry will work on the 92+ V6 trannys. There may be a difference in the axles, not sure.
* Also, any clutch and pressure plate for the MR2 Turbo will work in the 92+ V6 trannys
* All flywheels (currently the Fidanza and Aasco) for the 97+ Camrys will work on 92+ V6 trannys
* The bolt pattern for the automatic flexplate on the automatic V6 is the same bolt pattern as the flywheel. Except the flywheel needs its own flywheel bolts, but they fit perfectly.
***************************************
estimated cost around 1,350 depending on labor and other factors
***************************************
KEY: *-* = my thoughts from searching

thanks for forgetting about me.

well you have to remember too that the 92-98(i think) E153 have a short gear ratio and the later years have a taller ratio.

also main difference with drive axles is that they are longer than the non abs axles. if you junk yard all your parts get the abs axles as the input spines are longer.

in the gen 3 the i4 hard line works just fine.

erm i know the 96 ecu will throw a start sensor error that can only be resolved with a rpm switch (or piggy back)

also the spec stage 3 clutch with a fidanza flywheel has clearance issues. the fidanza flywheel is about .02 inches thicker and the same with everything else ..... slowly adding up. i had my flywheel milled down about .25 of a inch ....... after toasting that clutch.

if I can make some corrections on that....the shorter gear ratios are in the mr2 e153 as a certainty, and they are also a bit shorter in the 92-93 e153 that came with the 3vz

as for the different drive axles, abs doesn't make a difference since the only difference is in the abs sensor ring at the hub end. the differential-side splines themselves are actually longer on the 97+ e153 axles as compared to the automatic ones. from what we can tell though, the 3vz auto and 5-speed axles seem to be the same though- or at least close enough to use (according to ratko's swap). and all the hard lines are identical for the trannys and can also be made by using hard brakelines from any auto store.

As for the 96 obdII ecu....that's good to know. on the 94 obdII, the only codes that are thrown are shift-solenoid codes. Do you have any more info on the problem and how to solve exactly it on the 96 (i.e. what the rpm window switch is for exactly) or how a piggyback would solve it (I presume an emanage)?

as for the spec stage3 and fidanza flywheel- I have a spec stage 3 clutch and spec lightened flywheel (which is supposed to be the same as the fidanza one), and I have problems with the flywheel catching on the stater, but beyond that, nothing to do with the clutch really except for it sticking- which I think is from a bad slave.

did yours have the same symptoms chronoti? and did you ever end up installing your blower too?

okay , after reading i feel like i have missed some thing once again (nubiee syndrome acting up again) but i thought that if i got the solara tranny and both axles from that same car i would be good and would not have any thing else to worry about as for as it not fitting in the differential and that was where the problem was .... ummm

^ no, you're right....if you get a tranny from a 5-speed solara and also pick up its axles, you'll be fine. in the end, the most important thing is that you NEED 5-speed V6 axles, be it from a solara or a camry.

Just some information I wanted to add:

For those doing the e153 swap on a 5sfe, you will need to use
e153 Clutch Disc
S54 Pressure plate
S54 Flywheel

For higher output cars, ATS Racing sells Racing CV Joints which hold over 400whp. Swap those out with the OEM joints in the CV Axles.

No, use what I posted for those components only.
For all of the other parts, I suggest that you get it from the same type of car that you're pulling the transmission from.
