Engine temperature variation

I have a 93 Camry I4 with 142K miles. When I drive it I notice that the temperature seems to vary alot. After the car warms up, the gage sits in the middle. Then it rises to about 3/4. Then back to middle. It repeats this process whether I am driving around town, or on the highway. Is this normal?

No, might check the fans first. Not sure what's going on however. Maybe someone else will have an idea.

Flushing the cooling system, and changing the thermostat may help. It almost seems like the t-stat isn't opperating properly. In any event, changing the coolant and t-stat would be a cheap fix, and a good idea anyway.

make sure your fluids are good, and your resivour is full. If not you may have air in the system, or a bad thermostat.

There is a temperature sensor fan switch ... located on lower pass. side of radiator ... might be intermittent failure.

Is problem from water pump which causes bad coolant circulation?

Yes I solved the problem. I put in a toyota themostat. It is worth the $ to get one from a Toyota dealership. It now comes up to temp quickly and stays right there.

Thank you very much~~~ My problem is exactly the same as yours. I get the solution! How much did you spend for the TOYOTA thermostat?

I had a simular problem, a few yrs back on a 96 5sfe, but it was the infamous hair line crack at the top of the radiator...might give that a look too, never replaced the thermostat.

Its usually at the top front of the radiatior...its a hair line crack, look for a greenish stain, with seepage.
