Carputer

I am wondering if any one here has and installed a carputer in thier Camry,

what i have is a Epia V 600 MHz with a minibox M300 case with 256 mb ram (possible a gig real soon) and a Elmscan ISO OBDII. I need to figure where is a good spot to wire since i would run a dedicated line from the battery to a secondary fuse block or to direct to battery. I am just wondering if i should trunk it and run the 12V/USB/VID/Power/Reset Switch Up to the Front

Any Ideas Would be great

600MHz FTW! I don't know why people don't just use an old laptop and hide it somewhere, that way you don't have to worry about stalling out and having the computer reset because it has it's own battery. Then just wire it up to a touch screen monitor.

Hi Keisuke,

I am not the only one who is " insane" (that's what people said to me , when i told them that i build in a pc in my car)

This spring/summer i am going to build in the trunk a carpc .....i don't want the fan noise in my car. (epia sp13000 mainboards are making alot of noise)

I am thinking about to run the wire through the center(handbrake)console to the front.

What software are you going to use? I am thinking about Centrafuse or Meedios

geoff5093: some info about powersupply's, i hope it is the answer for your question........epia is using less power then a laptop 10-25W:

The link you showed me was to a 125W PSU, but i'm not doubting they have lower wattage PC's. I was suggesting a laptop not because of the low power usage, but because they are already compact in size and have a battery built in, so say if you stall out or quickly turn off, turn on your car, your computer won't shut off.

The way I did my install on the camry was I had the PC mounted in the trunk and ran all the wires to the front and put a hole in my firewall.

Some people like to go through the fender, I don't.

What I did though was I wired the remote wire of the PSU to my antennae so when I wanted to reset I just press the power button on the radio.

Right now im running Dual M2ATX (360 watts) power supplies with a gigabyte main board with an athlon 2400xp and 2 gigs of ram. For video I have a geforce fx5200. GPS (iGuidance), Wireless Game control for PS emulator and capcom emu.

I just got my quadcore from intel and 4 gigs of ram so my 2.4 is gonna go in the car soon.

GL with your build.

I went like this

Battery > fuse > DC-DC power supplies

Get a DC-DC powersupply like the M2ATX- They are great and have built in start up and shut down controls.

This means when they lose power (turn off your car) they will instruct the computer to shut down properly. When they gain power they automatically turn on. This eliminate the need for a power button. you can optionally install a reset switch incase of a freeze up or blue screen of death.

Inverter will cause too much noise in the system.

Mine's in the trunk. I ran the wires underneath the back seat, and under the carpet along the passenger side up front. Powered off an M2-ATX which receives an input directly from the battery (well technically a fuse block that's connected to the battery via a 4-gauge wire, which is run through the wheel well into the interior driver foot well, and underneath the carpet to the back).

Monitor you can run off the cigarette lighter up front with a turn-on signal hooked in-line with your stereo or carputer, or you can run the wires all the way to the back and power it concurrently with the carputer's power supply.

Not sure why you need an external drive. Just run an internal powered by your carputer's power supply and run the wires if necessary.

I could see you needing an inverter if you go camping and have electrical equipment... or if you wanted to hook up a console system.
