4th Generation 99 v6 starting problems

toyota nation ,i have a problem

my 99 v6 camry ha starting problems. The problem doesnt happen everytime just sometimes. Now the problem is when im ready to start the car,and i crank the key to start the car,the car starts but if the idle needle doesnt past the 1 mark the car loses power and shuts off.

I have kept the doing regular maintance on the car, recently changed all 6 spark plugs and the wire.(i thought having old spark plugs was the main reason for the problem).

Now i need yall help in figuring was is the problem my car is having?

Thanks In Advanced

i have the same problem. i have a 99 le i-4 with about 85K. problem only happens either when it is raining or when it is cold. i took it to my mechanic and he said its the egr and the throttle. just clean out the whole thing and it should be fine. maybe it works for you. but as for my case...it didn't work. my egr is gone bad...so bad that my check engine light came on and when checking the code...it says EGR. i have to replace a new one. but....in the meantime, i'm just sticking to the problem....until next inspection of course. next time if it shuts off again.....just restart it again and step on the gas at the same time....it will bring the idle needle up. hope this works for you.

The EGR valve should be shut at idle and Wide Open Throttle. It should be open during normal running. If it is clogged up and cannot shut it will cause stumbling or kill the engine at idle and cause a lack of power at WOT.

I am not familiar with the V-6 version but the 3SFE and 5SFE are pretty easy to remove and inspect. The built up carbon may be so hard that soaking in cleaning fluid may not help. I had to pick out the carbon with a small screw driver and pick. Also make sure to clean the hole into the throttle body where it attaches and look down the tube that it hooks on to to see if it is plugged up (not likely since you have an open EGR problem).

My favorite suggestion is that while you are in this area you might as well go ahead and clean the IAC valve and the throttle body as well.

Since it is cold, does the V-6 have a cold start valve and timer switch? Those can be checked too.

I know that the egr is not the problem with my v6..
The owner before me had blocked the egr.
4 years the same problem.

After i have installed the supercharger i have removed the blocking and have used the carburettor cleaner for the iac valve.

Now sometimes the problem is back.
I think it is the aic.......i had a blocked egr ............the problem still exist

yeah...my 99 camry LE does the same. i have a faulty EGR and my CEL has been on ever since then. i was thinking about replacing my EGR. anyone know how much it would cost? i went to my mechanic and he did clean out the whole EGR and throttle and the whole nine yards. but the CEL is still on saying the EGR is faulty. well....i guess i have to change it before my inspection is up.

NYC_99Camry: Take your EGR out and test it before you go out and buy another one. Just because you have an EGR CEL code doesn't mean that it is the EGR itself that is at fault.

JvR: Do I understand that when the port was blocked that you had the same problem (with or without the CEL?)? That being the case, couldn't it have become clogged or sticky in the meantime? Do the 99s use a modulator? If so, the tubing running between them can get clogged and cause faulty actuation.
