Hey guys my 93 camry xle doesnt reverse, However; it does drive foward. What do you think is the problem. Also, how much do you guys think i can sell it for if i decide to go that route? The body has about 180,000 miles but i just put a rebuilt one with like 70,000. It has a alarm wit remote start, all power mechanisms work, new struts, and new brakes.
I would check the Park/Neutral switch first. That switch tells the computer you have put the car into "R" and then shifts the solenoids. The cable may need adjustment or the switch may need to be adjusted but if you adjust the switch you have to be careful you don't misalign the neutral lockout position or the car won't start. It may just be the reverse contact in the switch that is not sending the computer the info or a broken "R" wire. You can unplug the connector and see if the contacts need cleaning. I don't think you can dismantle the switch to clean the inside contacts but maybe someone else can tell you if you can. Does the "R" indicator on the dash light when you put it in reverse? Other than that it may be the solenoids 1-2 or 2-3, but the fact that you have the other gears does not tell me the solenoids are the problem.

I would check the shift cable to the transmission lever first, or in your case, take it to a transmission shop for a free estimate... bring a friend and keep pushing!
