Hey guys havent been around in a while you'll see more of me when i get my new toyota. I have a question though. On my gen 3 auto 5sfe camry, when accelerating the last two days its failed to shift up a gear for extra power, it feel almost as if the car is stuck in 3rd or something. I can floor the gas, and it will have the same power as about 1/4 throttle. Im going to check the throttle tension wire today, but when i free rev in neutral its fine, which leads me to believe its a transmission problem, maybe as simple as new tranny fluid? Any help would be appreciated thanks.

do u mean down shift? does it happen in all grears or just third to second? usually bad fluid would cause hard shifts or somthing to that effect but ive never herd of it stopping down shifts. it is possible, when was the last time ya changed ur fluid?
While I wouldn't describe it as a "power" gear, I believe that you are describing the overdrive is not engaging. If you're lucky, you have inadvertently disengaged the button on the shift lever between the seats. There is a small button below the large thumb button that is pressed to engage and disengage the overdrive. If that isn't it, then you may have a wiring or electrical problem with that circuit or, the transmission's overdrive innards may have failed.
If your dash lights are working you should see "O/D Off" (or a similar message) turn on and off when you cycle the button on the shift knob. If it does then you know that the button itself is working and that you have a problem further down the line. If it doesn't you may have a burned out dash light or the button and/or wiring may be faulty. You can probably figure out a way to over ride the electrical part on the transmission itself to see if it is down stream or up stream of where you over rode it.
Luck,
Kep

The o.d button on the dash is not on, and its like being on the highway and in 3rd gear and i floor it to pass somone, it will not shift back up to second in oder to up the revs, even when i engage ECT. Even when in 1st gear ill accelerate and after i hit around 2700 rpms, it will kick down into a lower gear and keep the revs low with a lack of power. It took 20 seconds to hit 65 today merging onto the highway from 35mph.

OK, the automatics have first, second, third, and overdrive. So when you're in third and accelerate hard and expect it to downshift, it doesn't AND when you are accelerating normally it seems to shift from first to third. Is that correct? Like second gear doesn't exist? Or is it more like third gear doesn't exist?

I dont think that it is like second gear doesnt exist, because its not always doing what i said like today it was fine other then when i gunned it it hesitated shifted down like it was going to do it again then 2 seconds later it shifted back into a higher gear for more power so i dont know. Seems like its a pre-mature shift thats causing me to have no power, and it wont blip up to go for higher rpms no matter how much i floor it.
