3rd & 4th Generation (1992–1996 & 1997–2001)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 1992-1996 & 1997-2001
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
I have a 96 Camry LE V6 automatic (collectors edition). I was on my way home from work Friday and on a 6% incline. Traffic came to a stop, and when I started again the engine light came on and the car started lurching (felt like I let out more clutch than gave it gas if it were a manual tranny,... but it's an automatic), then stopped and ran normally for another half mile. Then when I had to stop again (still on an incline) it did it again, but this time the tranny failed completely (I could shift into any gear, but car reacted as though it were in neutral). I got the codes from an ODB II, and it showed P0500 (speed sensor A malfunction) and P1705 (manufacturer controlled transmission). Is it as bad as I think it is? Do I need a new transmission? Am I royally screwed?
it has 120k, is used mostly for city driving (i live in los angeles) and it had a tranny flush about 6-8 months ago and has never overheated (not according to the dash indicator anyway). all fluids are ok as far as i can tell.
Well, it could very well be a failed speed sensor as it is indicating, or it could be a slipping transmission based on your symptom. (I suspect the later) I would double check the fluid level to be sure, because this can be caused by a low level. One other possibility would be an electrical issue. Check to make sure your alternator is putting out at least 13.5V. Otherwise, you will need to bring it to a trans shop to get diagnosed. Insist on them doing a pressure test, a stall test, and a road test to fully diagnose it. Too many shops seem to go straight to a re-build recommendation. Have you had any other symptoms prior to this one?
Bump from the dead! The crapalon is sick again, throwing P1705 (gen1.0 Avalon XLS). I'm assuming it's just the "direct clutch speed sensor". I searched around the forums and ended up finding this. Seems like the sensor is easily reachable and shouldn't be too much of a bear to get to, test, and replace, no?
Also, is this part called anything else? People in other threads seem to have trouble finding it online.

Even if all the sensors died {I'm making shit up), it should go into fail safe and let the crapalon limp home. Not moving AT ALL does not = Limp Home. . . . its a trip 2 logic.
Sounds fatal. What of the engine noise? Same Crapalon? Can't be. . .

Uh 73... she still moves just fine. Just a check engine light, that's all. Yes, same crap-alon as earlier.

Haha no worries! I REALLY don't want the Avalon. Besides, I just got the Expedition that my dad use to drive. He got a Matrix TODAY. Anyways, the Avalon is my aunt's and i'm trying to get rid of all the CEL's that keep popping up. Basically all I need is a part number and how hard it is to fix this. (Assuming it's just the direct clutch speed sensor.)
