Heat loss issue

Hi,

I have 1995 camry, automatic. When i start the car, the car heats up and the needle on temp. gauge goes up. But when you start driving the car, the temp. gauge needle goes down to COLD. When I stop at traffic lights etc. the needle goes up again. What could be the problem and how to solve it?

Thanks,

Tekno9000

If you run it for a long period of time does it start to overheat? it might be that you need radiator fluid, your radiatior is clogged? im not sure but if its hot when you start it and then cools as you drive? huh maybe its a computer board problem? i wish i could help more but i would have to look at it.

ur thermostat may be bad. if it sticks open it can cause the engine run cool. ur collant temp sensor may be bad as well, but that usually throws a code when it is.

I believe the coolantis not a problem as I drained the old coolant and filled it up with new one. I am sure there are no leaks and the car doesnot overheat at any moment. Even if i leave my car on for a prolonged period of time. The needle on temp. gauge will be in center, but as soon as I start driving the car, it goes down slowly to cold position.

Thanks,

Could be the thermostat. What engine do you have?

Not an expert on this but if the t-stat checks out you might want to check the fans/control relay(s). Think they should run when stopped or idle but turn off when there's airflow while driving. If they're stuck on then they may be over-cooling while driving. Heard of the relay(s) getting stuck on.

It's not the fans, because tekno said it warms up at a stop light, and overcools at speed. It's not a clogged radiator, because that would cause overheating. It's not the coolant, because tekno also said it's new. It's the thermostat stuck wide open. Change the t-stat.

I agree with starting with the t-stat but if it runs at normal temp while stopped, it should mean the fans (and possibly the t-stat) are working. However, if the fans stay on all the time then they could cause the engine to over-cool due to the fans running plus natural airflow generated by driving.

Had same problem, engine cooled down considerably at highway speeds when letting off the gas. No overheating at red lights. Change the T-Stat

+3 for the thermostat. It is most likely stuck in the open position.

I feel the fan is working fine. Its not running all the time as I hear the fan run and stop. Now for the golden question. How do I change the thermostat and what are the specs to buy a new one? Will it be possible to change by me or a professional help is needed. I can do basic mechanic work. what tools do i require?

I wish to thank everyone for their comments and suggestions.

Thanks,

Tekno9000
