3rd & 4th Generation (1992–1996 & 1997–2001)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 1992-1996 & 1997-2001
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
Well i posted a thread awhile back but i still have one major problem i cant seem to describe it so i decided to post a video of what it's doing. It does this when i give it some gas to pass or to merge on a hwy and it's kinda dangerous when you have to merge and there are ppl doing 80+ sometimes and this car doesnt go any faster it just revs take a look...

whe it revs like that, is it smooth or does it hesitate, buck or surg? how does it idle? if the engine is reving ok like i see in the video then im thinkin of the tranny. that almost looks like a busted TQ converter. i had a similar problem but in a much older car.
I would add further, try checking/changing the fluid and filter(tranny), if this doesnt help or you cannot do this yourself it's mechanic time.
edit; after reading your other threads Some problems.. Hmm still problems
I would seriously check and recheck your tranny fluid. I would not be surprised if when you blew your head gasket, you maybe breached the radiator into the transmission cooler. Check for water/antifreeze in the fluid. If this is the case, the problem would get worse and worse. Might want to take the car for a drive and then check it. Check for bubbles foam, anything that looks out of place, from a regular oily consistency.

Ya i just changed the tranny filter and fluid today thinking that would help it but it didnt. It idles just fine and engages smothly it's when i give it some gas that it does just like the video. Sometimes when i give it some gas it doesnt rev like in the video it baraly gets to 4K and takes awhile to pick up speed.

I see your revs are going way up but the car's speedo is virtually still. You definitely have a serious tranny issue that only shows up at higher speeds or in a higher gear. I would recheck the fluid after a drive and look at the color. If it's a dark red or it's bubbling, you will need to get a tranny replacement.
But first things, first. Check how much fluid you have in that tranny. Also look for leaks when you park for a few minutes. Check and see how it shifts from park to drive to reverse. Clunks, delayed shifts slipping sensation? It all means trouble.
I hate to agree, since I never want to ever happen to me, but yeah..
It happening sporadically only confirms it's probably f-ed. So when you changed the fluid were there metal fragments? I mean if not maybe it's something not horrific, but it seems no matter what, a rebuild is at the very least in order. I think only a mechanic could really diagnose this for you, but you know where to tell him to look

Ya i figured that ha ha well looks like im through with this camry who knew a car with little mileage had so much problems Radiator,w/p,Hoses,Cv axles, struts, rotors, brakes
radio, and other things i havent even had it a full year well time to sell the money pit and start working on my 96 i know it's the same car but i always thought the 96 felt more sturdy and all the components are still original besides the engine which i got a reman short block and reman cyl head for it but i havent had time to put it in.

I'd agree with you but would it surge like it did? that's just not a good sign, if it totally free spun, I'd say yeah maybe. The fact that it sounds like the engine is trying and not doing a damn thing, then drops rpms all weird. I think the gear is gone.
maybe you could trade it in or sell it. However you want to sell it wink wink.
I sold a 1987 Buick Regal with 125,000mi, ran rough, but looked great in the rain. Sold it for three times the book at night and the guy didnt even bother test driving it, there's one born every day. I can say he was happy with the car, but I saw it in a junk yard a year later.

I don't have the guts to sell a car that I know has problems to a possible buyer without telling them what it is even if i could get away. I just can't do it...
In your video the car is running at about 50 MPH. In most automatic transmissions there is a lockup clutch for the torque converter. I don't know if there is one for the Camry but if there is maybe a problem with that would explain your problem in the high speed range.

i really dont wanna get rid of it but it's a real money pit fix one thing and another pops up i really like camrys. Ive had 3 of em a 1992,1995,and a 1996 and out of all of them the 1992 was the best one! not a problem with the engine or tranny. I had it for about 2 yrs and only needed the master cylinder replaced. I miss that car now. I wont feel bad for selling it like that hell cars get sold/traded like that everyday it would make a great city car though but i dont live in the city so it's hell using it on the hwy.
