USA Inner Axle bearing replacement - V6/92

Have a Camry 92 V6 and pulled the axles (both outboard boots are gone). Axles are GKN.
When I did the passenger side I noticed that the inner axle's bearing is pretty much gone. So, I took the inner axle out.
Has anyone replaced the bearing on that axle?
After some research the inner axle is not available as a reman part unless I replace the full axle. (Just done the half CV joint). Toyota told me:
- new: about $400.00
- but we also found that one gets the bearing as a spare part, and the 2 dust covers.
But, you need to get the 2 dust covers off before you get to the bearing and to do that the book tells me using a press and an SST.
Anybody with any experience for this procedure?
Not sure how to go about it. Can it be done?
Thanks for all the the thoughts and help!

There's a special driving tool you need to have in order to remove the one side of the CV shaft if I remember correctly. It's a royale PITA, I would just recommend getting the new axle for that side, but if you really want to go for it, by all means, go for it.

on my 4-cylinder drivers side axle, i had to re-use the dust shields. the axle i bought from napa didnt come with them. it was an easy thing to do. i used a screwdriver and hammer to work the old one off (slowly working my way around as not to distort it) and reinstalled it by placing a small block of wood against the shield and hammering that by slowly working around in circles. it didnt even take 5 minutes to do.
