Exclamation 97 5sfe rebuild kit - rebuilt done - knocks now

The engine in my Mother-In-Law's 97 Camry siezed. I plan on getting a rebuild kit, but I keep seeing either 98+ or 96-, is the 1st year of the 4th gen an oddball with the same engine as 3rd Gen?

What are the differences between the 5SFE in the 3rd gen vs the 5SFE in the 4th gen?

yes, the first ones were oddballs since they were obdI before 96 and have a couple less sensors than the obdII ones...most things are interchangeable though....

but somebody will help you out on the specifics- I'm not a 5sfe guy

and on that note, if you have the knowledge to do a rebuild, why not just drop in a used engine with low mileage and a warrantee? it'd be cheaper and a lot less work in the long run

The plan is to put in a temporary JY engine, have the current engine sent to the machine shop and then I'll rebuild it.

Can the block be removed from the tranny while still in the car?

97 engine should be identical to the 98.

The key difference between a 3rd/4th gen 5S-FE is that the 4th gen has no distributor. The PCV valve is located in a different location, and a bunch of other small details.

97 should be OBD-II, so it should follow suit with the 1998+

most people pull the engine & tranny together, its just easier on our cars than to seperate them inside the car

on the 5sfe, I don't see why not...it'll take some manhandling, but you should be able to do it

not sure if you can do it with the a/c compressor and power steering attached though...you may have to take the pump and compressor out with the engine then to get the space needed

I couldn't figure out any way to get everything aligned to get the torque converter to clear the bell housing. I guess I'm going to pull tranny+engine together tomorrow.

I have the Gen 3 manuals downloaded onto my flash drive if you need them. Just let me know where to send them.

Doh, that should have been 4th gen manuals, not 4rd gen. I did find another place with the 3rd gen stuff online.

Are the internal specs as pertains to a rebuild different between 3rd and 4th gen?

I'd forgotten about taking pictures. So I snapped a few today. While the block and crank are at the machine shop, I decided to clean the head up.

Think my wife will be pissed?
