3rd & 4th Generation (1992–1996 & 1997–2001)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 1992-1996 & 1997-2001
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
The engine in my Mother-In-Law's 97 Camry siezed. I plan on getting a rebuild kit, but I keep seeing either 98+ or 96-, is the 1st year of the 4th gen an oddball with the same engine as 3rd Gen?
What are the differences between the 5SFE in the 3rd gen vs the 5SFE in the 4th gen?
yes, the first ones were oddballs since they were obdI before 96 and have a couple less sensors than the obdII ones...most things are interchangeable though....
but somebody will help you out on the specifics- I'm not a 5sfe guy
and on that note, if you have the knowledge to do a rebuild, why not just drop in a used engine with low mileage and a warrantee? it'd be cheaper and a lot less work in the long run

The plan is to put in a temporary JY engine, have the current engine sent to the machine shop and then I'll rebuild it.
Can the block be removed from the tranny while still in the car?
The key difference between a 3rd/4th gen 5S-FE is that the 4th gen has no distributor. The PCV valve is located in a different location, and a bunch of other small details.

on the 5sfe, I don't see why not...it'll take some manhandling, but you should be able to do it
not sure if you can do it with the a/c compressor and power steering attached though...you may have to take the pump and compressor out with the engine then to get the space needed

I couldn't figure out any way to get everything aligned to get the torque converter to clear the bell housing. I guess I'm going to pull tranny+engine together tomorrow.
