3rd & 4th Generation (1992–1996 & 1997–2001)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 1992-1996 & 1997-2001
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
I have a 98 Camry the check engine light came on, I had it read and it was and EGR insufficeint flow(p0401 I think) Does anybody know what the likely cause of this is? I have heard both that it is normally the EGR valve or its normally the VSV.
I also got an ABS light that just came on. It came on after I parked on a bunch of leaves and sticks. I checked inbetween the sensors and nothing was there? Does anyone know what their resistance should be? Or what I should check? Any help would be great. I'll tell ya if I find any thing. Thanks. Slomo

For the EGR, the vacuum switching valve on the back of the block are common culprits, but I wouldn't jump to replacing it until you looked over the vacuum hoses and the make sure the EGR valve and ports in the intake manifold are clear.
For the ABS, I got your PM and code 36 is "open circuit in left front wheel speed sensor circuit". Pretty cut & dry, the computer is telling you that it isn't getting any kind of signal from that corner. The easiest way to verify this is to unplug the connector (up in the wheel well, the wire runs from the wheel up the strut and then onto the frame) and put a meter on it to verify you have no continuity. Replacing the thing is just as straightforward, and the ABS light will clear itself after you drive a few feet. Hope this helps.
I have a code 36. I thought this meant right front/left rear sensor circuit open on a gen 3 camry. Would cleaning the sensor make any difference? Also, I can't find the ABS sensor in the rear of my 1992.
thanks,
adam

Yes, your Camry is listed as front right/rear left, so you'll have to check both. Take the wheel off and look on the steering knuckle, it's the only thing on there with a wire attached to it.
good to know! is there anything I should be looking for when I take the wheel off that side?? Could the sensor be dirty?? or is it usually something more.
thanks,
adam

You'll most likely be looking for a broken wire or an open coil inside the sensor. Unplug it, check to see if you have continuity across the terminals.
