3rd & 4th Generation (1992–1996 & 1997–2001)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 1992-1996 & 1997-2001
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
Last week I blew my head gaskets on my ~300000km 3vz in my camry..
I went to an importer to get myself a "new" JDM 3VZ-FE engine.
The engine seems to be made in August 1994 because it was written 1994/08 on the water pump and the A/C Compressor was R132 (This was a new norm. in 1994 for all vehicles and normally when converting from r12 to r132 they only change the evaporator)
Plus.. an interesting thing is that the JDM Throttle body had what it seems to be a Traction Control module. Here is a picture of the Throttle Body:
Since when does the 3VZ-FE comes with a Traction Control? is it possible that I got a more powerfull 3VZFE Engine that what I had stock ? I've read that the differences are not mechanical betweek the '92-'93 and the '94+ engines..

For the traction control I did not made it work, first I didn't have the ECU, then the wiring was made for a car from Japan so the ecu was not on the correct side and the guys at the shop broke the traction control ECU.. I used my USDM throttle body/wiring/ecu.
I didn't get the ECU because the engine was originaly in a A/T car.. I'm pretty sure I can get the it if someone is interested... or if someone can tell me how to convert an A/T ecu to M/T I'd do it I think this is wnat makes the difference between 189/194 and 204/209

I think I will reach it soon anyway.. the SAFC is working well, only need to get tuned and I got a Y-Pipe fabricated by Toysrme I'm pretty sure I will get it soon..
It's unbeleivable how the OEM Y-Pipe is restrictive. With the engine I received a Y-Pipe cut in the flex and I could see how the junction is made.. too bad I have no pictures it's really restrictive

If I remember my research correctly, the JDM 94+ 3VZ can only mate to an auto transmission. There are some differences in the bell housing which would cause the manual tranny to not mate up properly. I don't know how much work to make it work though.
Also the difference in power is due to ECU tuning, and probably something about the lack of EGR. If you put in a USDM ECU, you'll get CEL for the EGR and you'll lose the extra power.
$550 is a great price for an engine... your car looks exactly like mine did except for the seats, I had leather. Boy do I miss my car.
EDIT: I'm not sure if the SAFC can make up for the tuning differences between the old and new ECU, however the idea of the y-pipe on the new ECU makes me giddy lol. Its at 204 stock already, that means there is a chance it wil make 220hp with nothing but the Y pipe.
There is no EGR but I'm getting no Check Engine or whatever because of it.
For the manual transmission, there were no problems putting mine on the engine
550$ is a really good price, the timing belt was still like new but I changed it anyway.. no usual "leakage" on the valve covers, the engine had clearly less than 100000km on it.. I'd say about 30-50000km

So you swapped in a manual too? Maybe you don't have the 204hp newer 3VZ.... I have no clue.... Toysrme would probably have more insight on this.
I'm trying to talk to him on iChat but he is never available.. heh
I didn't swap manual, the car was already 5 speeds.. I just connected my tranny to the engine without any troubles.
And I don't think there would be any problems on a '94+ engine because 1MZ and 3MZ too are possibiel to connect to a E153 tranny

On the throttle body.. this one is longer.. next to the TPS sensor there is a motor that activate an other flap to restrict air
