3vz advancing timing when hot

I have a 3vz in my MR2 and Ive been having trouble for a while now. I noticed my car starting to ping and I checked my timing, I was completely off the scale. When its cold its completely fine, I can have timing set at 10º BTC but when it gets to running temp itll be roughly around ~20º. To keep a decent timing I have to have my distributor fully retarded to get to ~12º BTC when at running temp. But when its cold its down at ~1º BTC where it really should be with the distributor clocked fully retarded...

Ive replaced the AFM and TPS as Ive read both are used by the ECU to determine timing.

All I can think of now is wiring or ECU. Any ideas?

... Something to do with engine temperature maybe ... Check the resistance of the Engine Coolant Temperature Sensor ... and also the temperature at which you take the measurement .... At 70F, it should measure 1 or 2 kohms.
Are you getting any CEL codes ...
If you can access the Gen 4 Diagnostic section of the repair manual, there is a resistance vs. temp chart on p. 35
Do you have access to a scan tool?

no CEL. the engine is a 93 so its not OBDII. I did take it apart today and noticed the coolant temp sensor at the thermostat seemed to have come off and got tore up by my alternaot belt so I spliced on a new connector and plugged it on but its too cold to put it back together Thanks for the input and Ill let you know if that was the cause of it tomorrow.

yup, every time. CEL flashes, but no codes. No problems in the wiring with that. I want to check a few more things but Im really leaning towards an ECU failure. I havent checked to see what it does when I pull the jumper out of te1 and e1 during a timing test. Itll be interesting to see if it advances or not.
