I did an I-4 EGR. They should be similar. I'm surprised that you weren't able to find anything in the search files. Check the Gen 1-2 forum also, they may have some pictures. Anyway, once you remove it soaking it is helpful but in my case the carbon deposits were so hard that it didn't help much. I have a set of dental picks that I used to carefully chip away the carbon. Afterwards I soaked the valve and brushed off the rest with a tooth brush. I also found that the hose from the EGR to the EGR modulator was filled up. I used a dull phillips head screw driver to clean it out. Also clean the hole where the EGR hooks up to the throttle body (don't know if that is the same for yours or not) and look down the tube that the EGR hooks onto to make sure that it is clear.
Hook a tube up to the EGR and you can suck & blow on it to hear/feel the valve working. Once clean, put it all back together.
