I recently did my egr valve I got a 97 v6 my mechanic wasn't able to clean it out and showed me that the valve wasn't allowing proper flow but I got a new one with the sensor an everything attached installed for 240 noticed a big changed in my gas efficiency I regret not getting it done earlier

Thats a very good question. Of course the manuf doesnt want you to clean it they want you to buy a new one.

For my two cents worth, all i know is that some people remove it and soak the whole works in seafoam for a few hours, then blow it out. Not sure how this would effect the flexible belllows part though. They are stamped together so theres no question of taking any of them apart, and you couldnt find parts if you did. On my truck i soaked it with seafoam through the hose holes and didnt bother removing it, the excess just gets sucked into the engine and burned.

In case you didnt already test your egr, heres how (besides reading the code if the CEL is on of course) - with engine at idle, reach up underneath it and press up with your fingers on the bottom. You will feel the membrane part flex and your idle will change (get worse) the more you push. If it does this, the EGR is probably good.

the way i did mine was.. i went to the junk yard and got a used one, bc i pulled it off my self they charged about 5 bucks..i didn't want to take mine off unless i had another one. i then took the junk yard one and sprayed a can of break cleaner and put it on.. worked for me.

I did an I-4 EGR. They should be similar. I'm surprised that you weren't able to find anything in the search files. Check the Gen 1-2 forum also, they may have some pictures. Anyway, once you remove it soaking it is helpful but in my case the carbon deposits were so hard that it didn't help much. I have a set of dental picks that I used to carefully chip away the carbon. Afterwards I soaked the valve and brushed off the rest with a tooth brush. I also found that the hose from the EGR to the EGR modulator was filled up. I used a dull phillips head screw driver to clean it out. Also clean the hole where the EGR hooks up to the throttle body (don't know if that is the same for yours or not) and look down the tube that the EGR hooks onto to make sure that it is clear.

Hook a tube up to the EGR and you can suck & blow on it to hear/feel the valve working. Once clean, put it all back together.
